Bits & Pieces (TGIF and RIP Steve Jobs Edition)

Universal will make the film Tower Heist available on demand in two cities, three weeks after it debuts in theaters . . . for $59.99. Universal, for some reason, thinks this is a test of the viability of whether or not being available On Demand (for $60, three weeks after it opens in theaters!) hurts performance in those cities.

A test would be doing this the same day it debuts in theaters, or 3 weeks later but in more than two cities . . . or charging $25 instead of $60. I dunno. I guess it’s good the entertainment industry dips it’s toe in the waters of modernity, but they still don’t look like they know how to swim.

Steve Jobs as Pop Artist. Steve Jobs and the art of simplicity. Steve Jobs was a billionaire. What’s going to happen to that money? You’ll never know. Jobs as visionary. Steve Jobs says we don’t ship junk. Steve Jobs answers an insulting and condescending question at the 1997 WDC with grace and aplomb. Loved that guy. So much.

Steve Jobs talks about Xerox PARC, stealing ideas, critiques Microsoft, and more. I believe this is from when he was trying to get PR attention for NeXT.

Below, a bio of and interview with Steve Jobs. This was maybe a year before Steve Jobs returned to Apple. Listen to his prescription for Apple, which was tanking at the time, to return to its former glory. When he came back, he did exactly what he said should be done—and he was right.

Finally, Steve Jobs 2005 Commencement Address at Stanford.

  1. Do any of you tech gear savvy folks have an opinion of the new Kindle Fire? Plusses? Minuses?

  2. The 2005 Stanford Commencement Address is a really wonderful, thoughtful, and inspirational speech. Well worth the 15 minutes to hear it. I think I've listened to it 3 or 4 times this week.

  4. Since it's Friday, and since this is Bits & Pieces, I'll just post that I think that I found a really hot pair of boots tonight (I have a hard time finding shoes that I like). I'll try to post a picture over the weekend to get some feedback.Snow from yesterday is still on the ground. I'm hoping for a thaw this weekend so that I can work on the fence in the backyard in order to contain my Houdini dogs! See y'all later. . .

  5. I'm not giving up my books yet for another computer screen. I spend too many hours everyday working in front of a computer. My favorite gift to receive is still a book. That's just me though. Funny my husband wanted to buy me a kindle for my birthday and asked the kids what they thought, they all said, no way. :-)Maybe some of you heard or read of Mayor Bloomberg's comments about the OWS protesters. He reminded everyone that NY jobs are financial jobs and so they need to be protected, and so he's making it as difficult as possible for the protesters. Here's the mayor of Seattle: We understand that Occupy Seattle wishes to have a sustained presence in Westlake Park for the purpose of expressing their views. From the outset we have been trying to work out a solution that meets the city’s needs and Occupy Seattle’s need to protest against wealth inequality in our country. My staff has been reaching out to and communicating with members of Occupy Seattle. Here’s how we are proceeding: We are providing a permit for protest activities at Westlake Park which will allow them to have an organizing tent that can remain overnight. As a condition of the permit, protestors will have to allow for cleaning of the park, protect park property, accommodate the other existing permitted events, and protect access to businesses. We are making City Hall Plaza available for those that wish to stay overnight, with reasonable restrictions on the tents so as to allow free use of the plaza during the day. Unlike Westlake, City Hall also has restroom facilities available. Both the permit and the ability to set up tents at City Hall Plaza would last for two weeks, at which point we can assess whether the arrangement is meeting everyone’s needs and should be extended. These are extraordinary times. We have seen the Occupy Wall Street movement take off in cities across the country, and there’s a reason for it. There is real anger about the unprecedented concentration of wealth and power in this country and the inequality it has produced. I share the values and the message of the Occupy Wall Street movement. We want to provide the opportunity for the people of Seattle to express their views. And we are.

  12. While I don't live in one of the cities that's offering the $60 ppv, I'm intrigued by the concept. I know the price seems steep, but when you consider what it costs our family (5 of us) to go to a first run movie (~$65 if it's not 3d or IMAX plus the hassle of dragging three kids through the mall) it's pretty reasonable.

  14. scat, it wasn't that big of a deal with liam, but he and a couple others were hassling NoVA one day and I entered the fray. I probably shouldn't have because then I got involved in a long drawn out battle………………yikes. Anyway, I hate the way they (just a few) try to drive people away, but it works.I'm out until tomorrow all………San Diego or bust.

  16. scat: I find it interesting, but the price still seems to steep for a 3 week delay, to me. I can't imagine a situation under which I'd do it–and I want to see Tower Heist (it looks really good, if you haven't seen the trailer). Under the right circumstances, I guess . . . but if I pay money for a specific On Demand movie, it's from Amazon on my Roku. I've got Comcast, but the last time I ordered a movie on it was 3 or 4 months ago, and it was a treat for my oldest. Before then, it had probably been a year. I like Netflix–lots of different and interesting stuff, one low price. Nothing first run, or even really second run, but that doesn't bother me.
