Operation Fast and Furious

An update on Operation Fast and Furious. Attorney General Holder testified in front of Issa’s House committee on May 3rd where he testified that he’d only heard of the operation in the “last few weeks.”
It turns out he was briefed on the operation at least 7 months prior. When asked about the discrepancy, the Justice Department said:
” And tonight they tell CBS News, Holder misunderstood that question from the committee – he did know about Fast and Furious – just not the details.”
Another excuse, cited at the link, is that Holder doesn’t always read his briefings.
Hoooooookkkkaaaaaaay. So, either the AG doesn’t understand that letting guns, purchased with your tax dollars, walk to Mexican drug cartels is a bad thing to do. Or, he’s a lousy AG who’s in over his head.
Meanwhile, at least one American Border Patrol agent is dead and, according to Mexican investigators, at least 200 Mexicans are dead as a result of this operation.

  1. Why was Holder ever briefed? Was there a Joint task Force with the FBI? Because it had cross border implications, I could understand State Department review, or CIA coordination.Do any of these stories indicate why the AG should have been or was even tangentially involved? Is there a Federal Court order that ATF get Justice Department approval for its operations? I am completely baffled by this story.

  4. "Do any of these stories indicate why the AG should have been or was even tangentially involved?"I haven't seen anything. Maybe because some people involved were afraid it was going to blow up in the ATFs face and were maybe hoping the AG would step in or make a phone call? I imagine some of the folks observing the programs implementation probably thought: this is a very bad idea. Somebody needs to step in and put a stop to this.At least, that would be my guess.

  5. Can someone give me a 101 here? I've been following the story, but i thought this was an ATF thing, which is part of Treasury — why is Holder even involved?

  6. Because it was a joint task force with the FBI. I think what happened was the local sheriff's telling the ATF/FBI that "we get calls all the time from gun dealers tipping us off to possible cartel buys.". The Feds decided to "follow the gun.". Somehow, it became a good idea to allow those guns cross the border. Once that happened, it spun out of control. You'll notice, no indictments on the original investigation. Why not?
