Shepard Smith clear has an opinion about our involvement in Libya, and he doesn’t think much of it. He asks senator Lindsey Graham some pointed and snarky questions. “So, about time to get into Syria, right?” Interview starts about 1:25.
Some of you have noticed Nathan Sullivan is following the group. I invited him to take a look around. He’s a good friend of mine, and whip smart. Whether or not he’ll find this conglomeration to his taste, I don’t know, but I thought I’d give it a shot. In any case, in addition to regularly contemplating the conundrums that have long stymied all of mankind (or womankind) in his (or her) search for meaning, he (or she) publishes a wicked-cool graphic novel.
It’s love the graphic style. Seriously gorgeous. Check it out.
No doubt, all this made you, like me, think of Mike Nesmith’s (formerly of the Monkees) bizarre song and video from 1981 entitled “Cruisin'”, but better known as the Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam song.
Went to Apple.com after the iPhone 4S announcement, and this is what I saw:
I bet heads are rolling at Apple right about now.
All right. That’s all for me today. Laterz! — KW
All right. One more. In high school, I loved a set of songs I had taped off the local college radio station from a “group” calling itself The Android Sisters. The problem is, it wasn’t an actual album off a music label, so you couldn’t go to the local record store (remember when they had those?) and buy it. You can now buy it direct from the original publisher, but I thought I’d just share one (make that two–listen to Livin’ in the 50s, too) of the tunes from that fine album. A sly commentary on automation in agriculture? You tell me. Down on the Electronic Farm:
I can't figure out why Obama has chosen to demonize Cantor. Did Boehner focus group well? I think, for most people, Cantor is very obscure/unknown. It's not even his district. Is it personal? If so, how does it help him electorally? What about his supposed "cool head under pressure?"Thoughts?Obama whines about Eric Cantor.
McWing, it's campaign season? Seriously, Cantor was the one who said they could possibly pass a couple of things, I think he picked the free trade deals and lower taxes on government contractors. If Obama believes in his job bill, why wouldn't he call the man out who essentially want to gut it. It wouldn't characterize it as whining though.Has anyone wondered why, if these free trade deals are going to be so great for unemployment, that we're planning to spend a bunch of money in training for all the jobs that will be shipped overseas?
Kevin, I didn't read Nate's entire graphic novel but I loved the artwork on the pages I looked at. I really enjoy raw work like that. And your songs aren't too bad either. ThanksI'm working on a piece for tomorrow that I'm really sure will just thrill everyone………. income inequality. There's a new study out that's interesting, to me anyway.
michi, willows is a guy, just thought I better let you know. His wife just had their third child about a month ago I think.I'm monitoring for tao.Hi SueI missed the Warren debate also, but we're watching the Tigers.
Good to know! I was assuming from the handle that willows was female, but I was thinking all day today when I was trying to (first) catch up and then (second) find an opening that willows was posting more like a guy. Interesting what cues you pick up without knowing.Good info; if he takes the bait I'll let you know.Go Tigers!!!
Keven, BGinCHI is a liberal and he said he'd be able to check in more often in a week or two. I know, we'll use tao for bait. Hi tao. People were just sharpening their private eye skills yesterday to try to find you.
Kevin, I don't know how as he came in as a commenter not by invitation.Tao, want to give me an email and I'll send you an invite so we can set you up properly. Unless kevin knows an easier way.
tao, we need your e-mail address. Anything that you can get to to accept a link, doesn't have to be a "real" address. If you like, just add it to your profile.
Sorry for the delay in the response. My point is, IMO Cantor is pretty obscure to most ofmthe electorate. It'd be like Bush waging a personal war against Steny Hoyer or James Cyburn. All you would do is make most people scratch their head and wonder who he's talking about. A secondary negative effect is that he is elevating Cantor and virtually equating, if not raising above his own, Cantor's power. It diminished Obama and makes him look impotent. Is impotence an attribute you want in a President? That's why it doesn't make sense. At least Boehner is a more known face of the GOP, keeping the attack on him, though still looking impotent, at least doesn't dilute the message of who the villain is.
Didn't get a chance to try georgia today, but I'd like to get both her and prag (Buckeye that he is–he and qb ought to be able to bond over that, at least!) 😉
Hi McWing, I guess I see your point and maybe you're right about Cantor's obscurity. I forget how involved we all are, thanks to Greg's great work, in the beltway personalities. Not sure I agree with the weak and impotent part though. I saw it as a challenge, but I didn't hear it, only read the quotes.
Jeeze, I hope I didn't scare tao away, of anyone he should be used to my lame jokes by now.Sue, we've all been trying to lure people in using little tempting ploys and you just go ahead and invite them, good job. Maybe we've been too protective, but there are still a few people over at the plumline that I wouldn't particularly enjoy having here. That'll test our skill though won't it?
I was just thinking that "impotent" is the right word. Frustrated, yes, annoyed, yes.And my R relatives, who aren't as obsessed as we are, know full well who Cantor is and don't like what he's doing, so who knows how this is going to resonate? They don't like Obama, but are fully as frustrated with the House leadership as we lefties are, from what I can tell.
I've been out since afternoon but am glad to see that my pot-stirring post kicked up a bit of an extended debate. I will take a quick cut a responding to a couple of points later.I haven't had time to check in at PL for a day or two, but glad to see the smoke signals finally reached Tao! Howdy, tao! Hope you will participate here. PL is so technically difficult for me right now that I just can't do much commenting there.
michi, I know quite a few conservatives as well, and a really good friend of ours is a very firm libertarian, and none of them are happy either, with anyone in Congress at least. I haven't talked to many of them since Labor Day weekend and so I don't know how they view the GOP presidential field.
I am not a graphic novel guy; I didn't even know there was such a thing until my son looked at me like I was a Martian a couple years ago when I said something like, you mean a comic book? But you are right, K, that is wicked cool illustration. And could the Apple announcement have been a bigger lame-fail? Sheesh. So glad we waited.
Evening all. I'm baaaack . . . kinda. Way too much catch-up to do. I can tell from qb's comment that there are some yummy posts just waiting for me. This is going to be a difficult month for me, time-wise.markinaustin . . . watch it with the OU jokes. I'm sure they're there somewhere. 🙂
And, ummmmmm, kevin . . . I am old enough to have been a bubble-gummer when the Monkees were constructed. Ewwww! Even then I had sense enough not to like them.
Hi okie, glad you're back, we've missed you. I saw mark's joke over at the plumline, funny guy huh? We'll be here as your time allows. Are the power issues resolved?
Hey, okie, goodtoseeya! Mark posted one on PL, but in the interests of comity I won't repeat it. I could tell you some good Buckeye or BYU Cougar jokes!Take your time catching up, lms and Kevin have been doing yeomens' work holding down the fort, and we've brought in some new folks. Really glad to see you avatar, though!
@Troll: Yes, but the Tigers are getting thumped. No joy in Mudville tonight. . .OTOH, we're having a whopper of a thunderstorm here tonight! I love a good thunderstorm.
Thanks, lms and michi. I'm glad to be back. Just lots of personal and work issues converging this month and next (power issues seem to be resolved, but still don't know what was going on). I see there are some new folks, great! And really glad to see tao here!
mark, qb, et al., thanks for all the posts on legal issues. Given my employment background, these are things I tend to be interested in, and I thank you for your respective perspectives. (Gotta love a rhyme where you can get it.)
Okay, I'm done for the night………….hope we see tao again soon, and okie as well.I have a post ready for the morning if anyone gets here before I do. I'm an early bird though.
Michi, I've been rooting for the Tigers but it wasn't there night. What a horrific 8th inning. I think the hated Yankees went through their batting order twice. Ouch!
Many thanks for the Athra plug. Always appreciated. Doubtless, I need to find more of my inner carnival barker and do more plugging myself. Fascinatingly, to me anyway, it seems to be a skill and not really one that I seem to possess. I listened to the MP3. Tres ambient. A nice change. I tend to listen to a lot of history lectures online and it's nice, for a change, not to hear about Romans killing barbarians and vice versa.Seems like a nice forum, by the way. I think forum is the right word. I've read several pieces over the last few days.
Mr. Sullivan, thanks for dropping by. Forum is the idea. I wrote the original rules of engagement up top–discuss disagreement as dispassionately as possible– that's my moto. Most welcome for the plug. Athra is awesome, and the stylized graphics just rock. You've really developed a great freehand drawing style, while I no longer have any freehand drawing skills whatsoever. That art school tuition was money well spent!
Hi NathanWe hope to see more of your work and comments. We have a group of smart and accomplished, even a little opinionated, people here, so we're happy you've dropped in.We're hoping to build a little bit of a different kind of community here and it won't be politics all the time, we're a diverse group, so I hope that will be proven in the posts we publish and the comments of course.
Many thanks for the welcome. Very kind of you.I suspect the college tuition was money well spent, but for different reasons. College changes people, usually for the better, as far as I can see.
Oh, I agree. It was a very valuable experience for me . . . another 2 years of technical school would have been a good thing, too, though, but I went straight to workin'. Ah, well, 20/20 hindsight! Thanks for coming by, Mr. Sullivan!
