Wanting a Re-Do on the 2008 Primary?

A recent CNN.com article (yes, for people paying attention, I went there from our own sidebar, “All News in Moderation”) article speculates that, knowing what they know now, Democrats might opt for Hillary over Obama, and in essence attributes Obama’s primary victory to his camp’s ability to game the system, as it were:

With the nation’s economy — and arguably its politics — in shambles, it is not very surprising to find in a recent Bloomberg poll that 34% of respondents think it would have been better for the country if Hillary Clinton hadn’t lost the battle for the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. A CNN poll released last week put Clinton’s favorability rating at a tremendous 69%.

Perhaps no one is questioning the 2008 results more than Democratic politicians who must face the voters next year. Right now, it looks like President Obama, rather than offering coattails to those below him on the ticket, may instead be serving up an anchor. This is ironic, when you look back at what actually happened during the Democrats’ 2008 primary, and at who made Obama the party’s nominee.

  2. For the life of me, I'll never be able to understand why people think Hillary's POTUS credentials are so great. Seriously, what did she ever do that shows that she would be a great or even good one? That being said, yeah, I hear from people that they think Hillary will and should primary O. I see essentially zero chance that happens, but I suppose I could be wrong.

  3. QB beat me to the punch about HRC's potential presidency. The grass is always greener for some people, particularly when things are not good. A little off topic, I hate headlines like the one on the CNN link. Second thoughts from 34% of respondents? Talk to me when that number is closer to 50%.

  4. I think it's way too late for someone, even Hillary, to jump in and primary Obama. I was never that much of a Hillary fan to begin with, mostly because of having Bill back in the WH. Of course Hillary fans from the primary, some with hard feelings still, will think she could have done a better job. I'm doubtful. I think the economy has trumped everything else and the fact that everyone's health insurance premiums and their cost sharing keeps going up doesn't bode well for Obama. But now that he's paying attention finally to jobs, that might put him over the top, even though I doubt much will change in that regard by next year. I'm a cynic though when it comes to Presidential politics so I'll be putting my time and money down ticket.

  5. Echoing QB and Mike, I think HRC NOW has credentials to run for Prez and that BHO NOW has credentials to run for Prez, and his are better than hers. The most difficult thing to do from a non-partisan view is to dump a Prez b/c the learning curve for being Prez is more than two years and it is like reinventing the wheel each time. This is especially true for the one area of the POTUS' supremacy: FP. So having been SecState or SecDef or even CIA Director is good training, but having been POTUS is the best.Echoing Mike, not only is 34% not surprising, it is fewer than the % of supporters HRC had in 2008. Big deal, so what?
