Bits & Pieces (Thursday Night Open Mic)

Real-life superhero Phoenix Jones arrested for being over-enthusiastic with pepper spray.

In the mid-80s, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac came up with a solo album. I loved the one video released from it, and the song, but it’s almost impossible to find. But, here it is.

For the video shoot, Mick Fleetwood shaved his beard. Probably shouldn’t have done that. Fans of Lindsey Buckingham will note that the video sounds very much like Lindsey Buckingham, both in terms of the singing and the writing.

I had a friend who was a musician during the 80s (he’s still a musician, but the story is from the 80s). He wrote a song called “Wrestling with Girls” that got picked up by local wrestler, Jerry “The King” Lawler. Amazingly, I was able to find it (or a segment featuring it, done on Jerry “The King” Lawler’s 80s talkshow) on YouTube. YouTube, is there anything you can’t do? The song starts at 5:56 . . .

What does this have to do with Mick Fleetwood’s “I Want You Back” sounding more like Lindsey Buckingham than Mick Fleetwood? Well, I had a copy of this song before Lawler decided he wanted to release it as a single. With the exception of the announcer segment, which is clearly Jerry Lawler, the song sounds identical. So imagine my youthful surprise when I heard the version with Jerry Lawler . . . and it was still Steve Cox. I think Jerry Lawler can be heard, off-tune, far in the background, if you listen closely.

A wrestler faking singing a song. Can you imagine it?

If you watch any of the leading in video (I did, for the first time since 1986), you’ll notice Steve was a uber-geek. I don’t remember him being such a big geek. Interesting how our perspectives change over time.

Anyway, for evidence that folks move in different directions as time passes, take a look at some of the traditional native American flute playing Steve was doing about 7 years ago as Voice of Golden Eagle. Same guy, extremely different vibe.

It’s really solid. “That was sunset song.”

  1. I'll re-post here what I said earlier: I nominate Kevin and ashot to do rapid fire commentary on the next Republican debate a la ashot's link earlier. Are you guys up for it???

  2. I mean, even if I had time, I don't know that I'd want to. But it's the school year, and debates are during homework time. 😉

  4. I love Lindsey Buckingham — one of my favorite guitarists, great writer, tremendous producer. And Mick Fleetwood is one of my fave drummers. Listen to that old Fleetwood Mac stuff — that's how you do it.

  7. I'll do it, but it'll have to be during lunch one day–delayed stream or something. I'm sure somebody has one of those. Look, I'll do what I can. But during actual debates, they schedule them when I'm doing family stuff, so they can suck it. 😉 Go Insane is an awesome album. As is Out of the Cradle. Street of Dreams is just a beautiful song. I'll stick that in a future bits & pieces.

If the debate does not include a virtual jet flying across a red white and blue filled backdrop then I'm boycotting it anyway, so it's probably best if we wait and do it the next afternoon or something when we have confirmation that this occurs. Anything less than that and it's just not American enough for me to comment on.

  12. @KW–I'll bet if you ask her she'd agree with me. :-)@ashot–we'll have to talk to Troll as our designated Tea Partier (and Marine–the Army doesn't have fighter jets any more) but maybe he could arrange something. . .

  13. Troll is a Marine? I knew I liked that guy. My grandfather served in the late 40s – early 50s as a Marine, so I've always had a soft spot for them. If you've ever in DC you have to see the Silent Drill Platoon and check out the museum they have near Quantico. I took my grandfather a few years ago — he was a mechanic and they had one of the landing craft that he worked on. so he started tinkering with the thing and 5 minutes later there's a crowd of people around asking questions and he's holding court.

  14. Well, it is nothing like a Fleetwood Mac pre Buckingham song, for sure. Was Christine McVie one of the women in white at the end of the video?

  17. KW – Nicks, to me, was a round mound of drug addled flat singing. Christine McVie, otoh, was all class [at least at a distance, who the hell knows what these people are?].As usual, our results may vary!

  18. I'm not sure when Mark heard and saw Stevie, but it must not have been the heyday of 70s Fleetwood Mac. Sheesh, Mark. She's too old to be hot now, and her voice is going, but she was all that back in the day. Drug addled, yes. They all were. Mick F was fired by John Mayall for being a drunk, legend has it.
