Bits & Pieces (Wednesday Night Open Mic)

Not much from me today. Feel free to add. I’m busy transferring data between my laptop and the new iMac at work, and it’s taking a lot longer than I expected. A little disappointed: I thought I was getting the big honkin’ 3.1 ghz 27″ iMac, and instead I got it’s less robust baby brother, the 21″ 2.8ghz model.

The iMac

Not exactly what I expected . . .

Ah, well, you get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit. I should be able to hook up my current monitor to it, doubling my working screen real estate, which is what I’m really after. Still could have used that extra .3 ghz, though.

    Its specs are here.

  2. Hey folks, just dropping by for a minute to say, I haven’t fallen off the planet, but work is beating me up and beating down. If I’m not around at all, that’s the big reason why, and I probably won’t be around much for a few days. (Poor cao and DD will be distraught “over there.”)

The blog is looking great, though. I haven’t even gone back to look at the admin threads, but someone has been busy here. This font is better than the last one I saw (looks sort of like Calibri?).

  9. mark (or any of you attorneys), see “Why I’m suing Barack Obama” in the Link Dump. Any opinions on whether this suit will go forward? Does he have standing? Does it fall into the black hole mentioned in the “10 Reasons” opinion piece of invoking national security/classified information as government defense? (I have ranted about that one for 10+ years!) I would love any analysis/informed opinion about that suit.

Someone else will have to think of an excuse to do it….but not when Liam is around and don’t use ATiM as the reason. The only reason I got mcurtis over here is because he put his email up on the Plumline and I took a chance.

      • Really, you need to look up my history via google. Google groups alt.revisionism mcurtis or Mike Curtis as searches. You should find a lot of debates with the deniers. When you work in that zone secrecy is next to godliness. There’s Nizkor.org and you’ll find me under people in their ftp archives. I’m a pretty safe bet.

Another group on RODOH we keep pretty secret and lock out certain discussion groups while we wroite articles about certain death camps to refute the foreign deniers. So I’m pretty familiar with your concerns.

    • I take that back, could we edit the word hate out in relationship to the link to the Plumline. I don’t think that flies for me and could be insulting to commenters there that are above the fray still. Also, originally we left because of tech issues……just a suggestion.

Otherwise, I really like the tone and the refugee bit. I was thinking of the “Island of Misfit Toys”……….. 🙂

  22. Thanks, Scott, nice touch on the About ATiM page.

lms: “I take that back, could we edit the word hate out in relationship to the link to the Plumline.” I would take out all specific reference to PL. Where we came from is not necessary to the point.

I hope it’s alright but I edited that sentence slightly and took the link out. I left the sentence in for now and we’ll let Scott look at it and make his case for the way it was if he wants…….or we can also edit that sentence out completely…….but I think it’s a little better now. Hopefully.

We’ll leave the About page the way it is for now then and see what scott thinks since he wrote it….. 🙂

  29. Okiegirl –

Back in the 70s I think Hedges’ lawsuit would have had a chance to clear standing issues in the WD TX, the Fifth Circuit, and the Supremes. A chance.

I am afraid that it has none now, but as Ashot has so clearly said, if a civil suit for Declaratory Judgment has no standing than the only persons who will have standing will be those detained without counsel. Catch 22.

I want the Supremes to rule on this. I do not think they will.

I will not vote either D or R if the Libertarian Party squarely supports repeal of this abomination.

I’m fine with your changes, although I do think the sentence you changed now lacks an appealing symmetry that my three “toos” in succession had. C’est la vie.

And, just to be clear for anyone who didn’t see the original, there was no specific reference to PL. I simply linked to the site under the words “from other blogs” since that is, indeed, where most of us came from. Having said that, I think people here are overly concerned about PL/greg’s sensitivities.

    Like

    • Change it to “too” divisive or something if you want. It was the connection between PL and hate that I objected to…..it was pretty clear I thought. I have some pretty negative feelings about that place but I’m trying not to bring it here for what it’s worth. I really liked the rest of it, even the three “toos”.

      Like

    • Scott, for the record, I “voted” for no link to or specific mention of PL in the About page not because I am overly concerned about sensitivities (although I see no reason to purposefully antagonize anyone). Rather, what if we do draw in traffic that does not come from PL; why promote that site to somebody who might not otherwise be inclined to visit it?

      Like

    • I changed it to “too divisive” (I like the triple-too’s) but somehow it doesn’t seem right. Change divisive to something else?

  31. Have any of you ever visited other forums where politics is discussed? PL is pretty tame. I just don’t suffer fools gladly and have better things to do than deal with games like Liam’s. I was given a gun forum and since I was to moderate it I did a lot of historical and legal research. In the end I found both sides warped. I still do. But the gun owners assumed I was liberal (the others thought I was conservative) so it was best if I was replaced by a gun lover. Hilarious.

    Really, PL is pretty easy.

    Like

    • mcurtis, I agree that PL is relatively tame. But most of us originally left due to tech issues when they changed commenting software and due to inconsistent moderator issues. Also, there used to be many intelligent discussions without all the “poo-flinging” but the character of the comment board has now changed dramatically. Maybe we were spoiled, but now one is attacked for attempting any kind of dialogue with a commenter who is not on the “approved” list.

      Like

    • If I’m going to spend “what precious time I have left” (lol) on a comment board I’d like it to be productive, informative and at least slightly enjoyable. A lot of people thought we left because we were thin skinned……nope…..just sick of it for all the reasons okie mentioned. We’re not afraid of lively or even contentious discussions, it’s part of the political divide, but we try to approach it in a less vitriolic and more respectful way.

Scott, qb and I have know each other now for almost three years, and we still fight like cats and dogs, but on some level we’ve discovered we can exchange ideas without killing each other or wishing the other dead….. 🙂

      • Well, I’m pretty sure that Scott and qb have wished me stunned until I came to my senses a couple of times, but we’ve never wished each other dead!

I originally started reading the PL because Steve Benen at Political Animal mentioned it; I’ve long been a fan of his and Kevin Drum’s (at Mother Jones, formerly the Political Animal who moved on and allowed Steve in)(yes, it does seem incestuous at times).

There are other blogs (The Oil Drum, for example, which lms and I became entranced with during the Gulf Oil spill which we have in common.
