Bits & Pieces (Tuesday Night Open Mic)

I a guy who wrote a blog novel got the novel published, there’s going to be a sequel soon, and now the first one has been made into a movie. It’s a weird book, but a great read. Reminded me of Stephen King filtered through tosh.0, in terms of writing style. Fun and imminently readable. It’s called John Dies At the End, and here’s the trailer:

Lionsgate tests simultaneous Facebook rental and DVD release. Is there anyone here who has ever or would ever rent a movie on Facebook? Amazon.com, Netflix, Flixter, sure. But Facebook? Well, maybe.

Dennis Hoff plans to open a sci-fi theme brothel in Nevada. That sounds fun.

I just watched Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory. It was strange to watch Gary Gitchell, the lead West Memphis investigator on the case, talking about the case at the time, and then to come in to work the next day and have him walk by my cubicle (he’s head of security for the district). Didn’t really realize until watching the movie that that’s who he was.

All I could think during most of the movie, with the Johnny Depps and Peter Jacksons coming out to hire the best forensic folks to review the case, is that—while these 3 men were not lucky, given their circumstances–they sure are lucky they’re white. Given the prison population in this country, demographically, they couldn’t find someone non-caucasian who had been railroaded to produce 3 HBO documentaries about, and then an independent film?

  1. Weird trailer. Sort of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” meets “V” meets I-don’t-know-what.

(Given the drama over at PL, maybe truth is stranger than fiction anyway. mcurtis, suekzoo, liam, shrink all leaving or taking a breather. One could write a great ‘based on true events’ thriller around the mass disappearances and postmoderator pinking sprees. And no, it isn’t worth providing links as the noise content is pretty high. Stay here where it’s safer.)

A sci-fi brothel? I’m conjuring up vivid images of what the brothel ladies might wear.

As for facebook, I wouldn’t buy, sell, swap or rent anything off them. Their security is not that good, IMO.

    Have a great evening!

  2. LMAO re PL, msjs. I caught some of it yesterday/last night and again today. Almost fell over laughing when mcurtis went on his self-righteous tirade about how uneven the pinking is. “Dood, we all went down that road 4 months ago. You’re pissing up a rope if you think you are going to turn Bethonie to the rational side.” [not a response actually posted] Just ask Scott. I’ve had my fix and don’t plan to revisit the comments there for quite some time.

And many thanks to whoever put “Why I’m suing Barack Obama” in the Link Dump. Hopefully that person has standing to bring the suit.

      • mcurtis, my comment here was in no way a slam at you (despite my most unfortunate use of the term “self-righteous” 😦 ). Rather, it was intended to note that, as a newer commenter at PL, you were experiencing and expressing the frustrations that many of us had already experienced there. We had already tilted at those windmills in much the same way you recently did.

  3. So does the cloud (the Moderately Cloudy cloud) work off of the tags we assign, or words in the posts? Pretty cool little gadget, that!

  4. What’s the difference between a tag and a category?

    Like

    • That’s what I’m still trying to figure out, lms. It appears to me that categories are what were called labels on Blogger. . . but then what the hell is a tag? When I saw the word cloud I thought that that might be what the tags are used for. . . and I’m too lazy to go poking around and find out for myself, because I figure that either Scott or Kevin already know the answer! 🙂

    • From what I’ve been able to figure out so far, michi is correct that category is analogous to labels at blogspot. I found this about tags on the WP “features” page:

“When you write a post and add relevant tags, we automatically add them to our global tag system and tag surfer, driving new traffic as other people interested in the same topics as you will find your post and leave comments on your blog. You’ll be at the top of our Blogs of the Day in no time.”

Perhaps we want to give some thought to giving our posts broad tags, such as “politics.” You should check it out and also check out what is returned when you look at their global tags.

  5. I think Scott is 2-for-2 on daily quotes so far. Has anybody else submitted any or are we at his mercy? (Obviously meaning that my lazy butt has not taken time to come up with any suitable quotes.)

  6. michi, the moderately cloudy words are categories/labels (old atim lingo) and tag have been added on some posts since we’ve been here but like you I don’t know the distinction between the two. Hopefully someone will enlighten us soon.

okie, I have a list of quotes and if anyone wants to email me some good ones please do. What I don’t know how to do is put them in. I looked around and didn’t see how or where to do it. Again, hopefully enlightenment will follow…. 😉

I love the look of the site and btw sue and I emailed today and she’s going to try to check it out more thoroughly soon. She was able to get here from the old bookmark and also able to access from work…..yay

That’s what I’m guessing right now.

    • Tags and categories are both good for getting into WP’s search. Categories are what posts are “filed under”, while tags are what other terms we might deem as relevant to a post.

  9. BTW, I left a brief comment on one of John/bannedagain’s posts at the PL tonight to try to get his attention. He didn’t bite though. He may just be frustrated or something because last week he was locked out because of the IE issue with blogger and got back in briefly when we reverted to the old format. I don’t know what’s happening with him now, but I do know he’s frustrated with Romney, Romney, Romney posts over there.

It’s on the “Widgets” page under the Dashboard–upper right-hand corner.

So tags are an external search engine and categories are internal to specific posts?

I think okie and you are right from her description. We use tags if we want to draw people in to the site, categories to keep things straight for ourselves.

P.S. I like threaded comments, so I promise to not complain about copying/pasting/bolding if you promise to not complain too much about threaded comments. 😀

  11. Okie, I think I dislike threaded comments as well, too much confusion for me. Let’s stick to new comments…….I will if you will. Yes, I saw your comment re tags. So we need to think about tags to attract outside viewers and potential commenters. That makes sense to me and I’m sure you’re right.

I went back to school about 9 years ago and took 5 or 6 computer classes after we bought the business, I think I might need to go back again.

  12. michi, I’ll go look for it. I’m not sure what’s happening with scott as far as access goes, he had a frustrating day, so I’ll try to figure it out so we get a new one up in the morning in case he’s not able to. Unless you want to?

  15. I think some of the regulars left at PL are not too bright (no comments on this from the right leaning peanut gallery, please). I guess now I’ll have to go check out algernon. That took the predictable nanosecond.

Have either of you (since we seem to be the only ones here at the moment) seen the entertainment about the WaPo daily opinion poll apparently being hacked today?

      Edited for clarity.

    • michi, don’t know what “do tell” was about. If about the poll, they had up some silly question today about climate change. The two choices offered were stated in a way as to be politically charged. I guess it was rolling along as usual, and then suddenly there were 5 million plus votes on it for what one would assume to be the “liberal” position and zero for the other choice. Followed by all kinds of conspiracy theory comments.

I saw that…..you get what you pay for.

I just hope scott will get it figured out….he worked hard to help us get set up and help with the upgrade etc. It wouldn’t be too equitable if he then couldn’t get in…..even though he annoys me…..;)

michi, I figured out the quote widget, so let’s wait and see if he puts one up tomorrow, if not I’ll plug one in. After that we’ll take turns or something.

  18. Re: the poll. Yes, that was what I was asking about okie. . . turns out to not be as exciting as I was hoping.

Thanks for the tech discussion tonight…..I learned a few things. We’ve only been here for five days and look at the progress, the posts and the comments. Change is good. BTW, I also heard from Taroya, she’s busy getting rolling in the new job but will be here soon.

Things were working OK at days end, so hopefully will continue to. Either way, I can always get into the dashboard, so no problem updating the quote widget. If you have one you like, send it to me. But don’t post it in a comment (a la the Einstein quote)…it should be a daily surprise that everyone looks forward to, I hope.

Since you seem to like the first two, I hope I have built up some good will so you won’t go berserk when I post an Ayn Rand quote. I’m pretty sure you will like tomorrow’s, which I’ve already picked out.

  22. Hey, scott! Rest assured, I will go berserk when you post anything akin to an Ayn Rand quote. You are representing the entirety of the blog with the daily quote. (That said, I suspect I’ll get over it in 3 . . . 2 . . 1.)
