Sorry For Screwing Up The Invite

I invited a lot of people as followers, then re-invited them as Editors. Hope that works. If anybody needs to be re-invited, let me know in comments or at Blogger. Whoops! Sorry about all the unnecessary email, everybody. And the confusion. That’s not WordPress, though, that was just me being in a hurry.

Excuse me for a second and I’ll go into the “Settings” menu and see if I can reset it to MST time (which is what the old ATiM default was).

Why, thank you. I like that.

When I first started posting on message boards, I was living in Hong Kong, and so the time zone was essentially the reverse of the east coast. As a result, I rarely had real time conversations and found myself replying to messages written hours earlier and buried underneath lots of other comments, often written by the same person. So I developed the habit of not only emboldening the specific part of the comment I was replying to in order to give my reply context, but I would link the original comment to the person’s name (as I did with yours above) so that the full context, if there was any doubt, could be found.

I still think that this tried and true method is far superior to the newfangled threaded posts. Why anyone would want to have to continually scroll up an down to see if anyone posted anything new to any existing comment, rather than simply scrolling down to the bottom in time order is beyond me. But then again, why people do half the things they do is beyond me, so nothing new there.

I like threaded posts if you’re carrying on a conversation with one or two other people that is totally unrelated to the rest of the thread–you can keep an eye on the general conversation as well as the one going on a little more “privately” at the same time. Kind of like being at a good dinner party when you’re having a fascinating conversation with your neighbor but want to chime in on other discussions going on around the table as well.

The old ATiM will be there forever, or until someone deletes it. My old blog is still there, and still gets an occasional comment, even though I haven’t added a post in 5 years. But probably a good idea to put up a post telling people where the live blog is.

BTW….on the dashboard, in settings, click on Themes, and have a look through. I think we can get a better look, or at least closer to the old look, than what we have here now. If you scroll to the bottom, I think the “Pool” theme is close to our old one. (click on “Preview” to see what our blog would look like in that theme.) The header is a little squished, but I think we could fix that. And I kind of liked Sapphire. I liked some other ones even better, but we’d have to pay to get access to those, and I didn’t scroll through all of them. Anyway, may be worth a look and we can discuss with Kevin the final choice.

So Mike et al, What are your thoughts of the video of US Soldiers urinating on dead Taliban bodies?

Speaking for myself only. . . none of us–even Mr Troll and I–know the hell that these guys have been through and are continuing to go through. One of the classic ways of coping with the fact that you are killing fellow human beings is to de-humanize them (hence calling Asians “gooks” and “slants” during our wars in the Far East, calling Middle Easterners of all ethnicities and religions “rag heads”, calling Germans “Heinies”, etc., etc., etc.); it has been going on as long as war has been. I was not shocked that they did it (although I’m disappointed that they did) and, yes, it’s an appalling thing to do, but they never should have video taped it. Since they did, they need to have the book thrown at them in order to demonstrate that we don’t condone that behavior. I don’t rank it up there with Abu Ghraib, but it was a stupid thing to do and even stupider to tape it.

I would also add that I wish we’d close Gitmo, end indefinite detention and repudiate waterboarding to demonstrate that those aren’t American values, either, but most have you have already heard me ad infinitum on the subject. . .
