Bits & Pieces (Friday Night Comics)(aka Figuring Out How to Create a Post and Schedule It)

NOTE for scheduling posts it appears that the default is Greenwich Mean Time, so you’ll have to do a little math to figure out when you want it to post; at least, we’ll know if I’m right if this pops up at 1800 EST/1700 CST/1600 MST/1500 PST this afternoon!

Update as of 1/13/2012 2219 MST: the blog is now set to MST (as the “old” ATiM was) so as long as we don’t muck around with the time zone–as I was doing today–everything should be fine.

For Scott, Mr McWingnut, and any other AGW deniers out there. . . you know who you are!  🙂

Never forget the science. . . science is our friend!

It’s all the Muppets’ faults.  Maybe we should stop linking their videos–it might have a bad influence on us and whether or not we believe in Universal Healthcare and the ACA. . . oh, wait, too late!

At least one of my cats has never figured out that this is how my beagle gets away with things:

Never thought about it that way!

All of the above were in Wednesday’s paper here in SLC–I haven’t laughed out loud at so many comics in one day in ages.  And, finally, in honor of Tuesday’s story in The Advocate:

image

Pat Bagley, our local editorial cartoonist.  Yee-haw!

Well, that seemed to be pretty painless–and, too cool! The buttons along the top (like bold and italic) automatically show you the html code if you’re editing in that window, so you don’t have to remember the code.  Now we’ll see if it’s scheduled correctly. . .

Forgot to change the scheduled time to MST, so we’ll see what happens in four minutes.

Let the countdown begin!

Update again as of 1/13/2012 2225: you can edit the size of the images (in this case, the comics) by clicking on them and then selecting the little icon that looks like a jpg icon in the upper left hand corner of the image (“Edit image”). I just reduced the size of each of them.

There’s a bit of a learning curve that we’re having to go through again, but I’m thinking that this site is going to be even better than Blogger was at its best. . . thanks, Kevin, lms and Scott!

  1. Michi, my favorite is the take on the Advocate piece…….so funny.

Let me know if you or anyone else figures out the posting thing and why your post isn’t at the top even though it was the most recent. I’ll be working on my scampi post and it’s scheduled for the morning………….yikes.

I figured out why the posts from today were screwed up in their order. The time stamp on both the bain and kevin’s post were after yours. I went in and changed them and now yours is on top. We should be okay with that now….it was during the day while you guys were working on the time and I don’t think they got changed even though they were posted at a different time.

      • Ahhhh–that makes sense!

Do you want me to add my steamed crab legs recipe to your scampi post? I have NO DOUBT that it’s far less impressive, but I just found out how to steam them easily and I’ve been living on crab once a week for the last three weeks so I’m dying to pass it on!

Maybe Paul will drop by with killer lobster recipe and we can have a seafood fest! I’ve also got a great recipe for California Fish Stew. . . 🙂

  2. Michi, the crab sounds great. I haven’t actually had time to write the post yet but am getting to it. I wanted to figure out the time thing first because it was bothering me. Go ahead and put your crab in whenever you want and I’ll work around it, either above or below yours. I generally eat fish once every week or two but almost never do I eat shrimp, crab or lobster, they’re a treat around here. I know I’m weird but we just eat very simple meals normally. I wanted to post the scampi on New Year’s Eve because that’s when I generally make it, but my oldest daughter was so sick we waited until New Year’s Day, and I was too busy to put the recipe up anyway.

I posted a comment on the “sorry I screwed up” thread that you might want to see, if you haven’t already. I’ll be back in a few hours.

Time for a game of bridge.

  4. Okay scott, keep me posted on what you find out re the “Cadillac version”. I’ll be around this weekend for the most part but don’t know how much help I can be. Do me a favor and email me your address so I can send you a check. One thing I don’t like are all the labels at the right, they should just be part of the “search this blog’ engine and maybe we could use that space for more current events or other blogs or links like we did at blogger.

And I’m jealous you’re playing bridge.

  7. Okay so I think I need some help. I’m working on my post for tomorrow (scampi) and every time I go to preview it, it cuts off the last paragraph. I’ve redone the paragraph several times and it just disappears. Ideas?

  8. FYI everyone, when creating a post it saves automatically but for some reason you have to hit the update button on the right side of the page before previewing or leaving. Otherwise, you might lose some of your work. Think of the update button as a save button and you should be fine. I think I’m right on this as some of my edits and additions weren’t saved to the post otherwise.

  12. Here’s link for Michigoose, looking at scientific integrity.. I’m sure all the British Climate Scientists are different.

How come when it’s unseasonably warm it because of global warming but when it’s unseasonably cool we’re not supposed to confuse weather with climate?

Nice Bits and Pieces thread, by the way. Great job!

    • That’s why its called climate change now, not global warming. Unusual weather patterns (like not going below zero in the twin cities for a winter, which hasn’t happened in recorded weather history), both warm and cold may be the result of climate change. The science does predict more extremes & more severe weather events, not just “its going to get warmer’.

  13. What’s the difference between tags and categories when you’re creating a post? The categories drop down has all of our labels from blogger.

    Like

  14. I was confused, too; first I tagged my post, then I saw the categories pop up with all of the “labels” from Blogger. I think we should just ignore the tags.

Also, when I refreshed the page when I came home it threw the page width off for me, also, and now I’m seeing what yello is–the comics are way too big and don’t fit inside the posting area any more.

And it was a slaughter tonight–when you’re tossing out 9.8s because they’re your low score on the rotation and the other team is counting 9.6s as their high scores it gets ugly fast. The Utes threw two 9.95s tonight (one on vault and one on bars), and a 9.975 on the floor (which means that one of the judges gave it a 10.0). Looking like a very good gymnastics year for us!!!

    • Don’t know how the page width got off, but I figured out how to fix it (noted in the update on the post).

As we start getting things figured out I’ll put together another FAQ for this site with how to make things work. How many of us have Monday off, or am I the only gubmint worker (although I’ll bet Kevin has it off as a slacker employee of a Public Indoctrination System)?

And speaking of gubmint employees, that reminds me–I got an e-mail from taroya and she started her new job on Wednesday. Yea for gainful employment!!

    Like

  17. Scott,

I’ll be glad to chip in for the upgrade as well.

After all, the crisis and challenge of our times is to make sure everyone pays his fair share.

Seeing how customization works will probably help me get my law blog in shape anyway. I registered it over here last night, given Blogger’s now freeze-prone state, but am sadly disappointed in the theme options and lack of customization. That’s one thing Blogger has going for it, and I spent a lot of time over there developing a look that I really liked. No dice here at WP, so I might be doing the upgrade for that as well. ATiM might give me preview of what can be done. (Always looking for a way to exploit and make a profit from the work of others.)

I think I can find or have your business address if that’s the right place to send my “fair share.” If not, let me know.

    Like

    • I’m in on the upgrade also, scott. If nothing else, to show that even those of us at the lower end of the economic scale really do want to pay their fair share. Of course, I think it should be on a sliding scale. :>)

Anyway, please let us know how to accomplish this.

I’ll be around this weekend, I can’t put off my paperwork any longer, so let me know if there’s anything you need an opinion on when making changes. Kevin’s usually pretty busy on the weekends. 23. Mich:

Bridge was fun, as always. It’s a bit of a labor, as we play with the neighbors and one of them struggles mightily with the game. She’s constantly asking “What’s trump again?”, virtually every time it’s her turn to play, and never really knows what to play.

Had a couple of interesting hands, but got crushed on a two no-trump bid. I kind of got left in it by my partner, and it was a bad fit. One of the defenders was long diamonds (8) and I only had one stop. Once I used it and then lost the lead again, I was toast. He just ran through the diamonds and all I could do was watch. Went 3-down. But we cam back and won on a 3 no-trump bid on the next hand, so all was right in the end.

    • scott, love it that you are a bridge player. I used to play regularly but have not for some time now. You must have a great deal more patience than I do if you regularly play with someone who has to ask “What’s trump again?” all the time. Is there alcohol involved? Empathize with going down on the 2No with bad distribution, but sometimes if you can pull one of those off it’s even better than making a slam IMHO.

  25. Regarding my name in blue, past tense I see, I was snooping around last night and noticed that under users’ “names” mine said something about “gravatar”lmsinca, but it’s gone now and I didn’t notice anyone elses with that distinction. I have no idea how I did it because the only info I gave wordpress was my “name” (lmsinca), my email and a password.

  27. I saw that gravatar thing by your name, too. I know when I uploaded Mr. Burns it took me to whatever that Gravatar page is (made me a little nervous). I assumed everyone’s avatar is loaded through this Gravatar thingy, whatever it is, and just shrugged when I saw it noted by your name in particular.

Posts have no author names, which they should have.

    • qb, go to comments in the dashboard and then page 2, my comments there still have it (gravatar.com) although it’s gone on recent comments. I’m sure that has something to do with it and perhaps scott changed it this morning somehow, or someone. I did like the blue though, it made me so special.

      • Very mysterious.

I was doing a little googling for info and saw something that said some themes don’t include the option showing the author of a post.

Wondering if that’s the case and if this is one such theme. I couldn’t find any setting for it.

        Like

        • If it’s the theme that can easily be changed. When scott gets back we’ll look into it. I’m not one to make too many changes myself but you can if you want to try. We see the author of the post, it’s just not in blue. It’s funny, in the comments page you see more than if you’re reading comments under the post itself.

          Like

  28. You mean on the dashboard? Yeah, I see authors there.

I won’t try to mess with the theme other than perhaps previewing some for myself, but I do think we need one that will show post others on the home/blog page and individual post pages.

  29. Well we have the weekend to resolve some of these issues and forever really. 🙂

I’ll let others figure out the the details, although I will express an opinion, and I’ll just concentrate on getting everyone in. That’s challenging enough for me. Okie made it but it wasn’t easy. We’ve got over half of our regulars over here now so that’s something. I think the site format will work just fine once we work out the kinks and the alternative at blogger just wasn’t feasible. We’ll get back to arguing soon enough.

  30. I can confirm from previewing other themes, authors are shown with posts on many of them. I’m good with whatever folks want, but just in case anyone is browsing themes, some that caught my eye were, in no particular order:

    Sapphire
    Comet
    Kubrick
    Vigilance
    Coraline
    Clean Home
    Blogum
    Neutra
    Twenty Eleven
    K2-Lite

Most of these are simple. There were a couple of other plainish bluish ones whose names I don’t recall.

When scott gets back we’ll have him try them maybe. I think the only one who has access to the ATiM logo though is Kevin and so we may want to hold off until he can change it.
