Bits & Pieces (Wednesday Night Health Edition)

Well, there goes my reason for drinking red wine!  Guess I’ll just have to stick with white. . . and the occasional martini when I’m out of state (due to Utah’s often odd liquor laws a real martini can’t be made here:

Metered Dispensing
Utah law requires restaurants, clubs, on-premise banquet licensees, reception centers, and airport lounges to use a metered dispensing system that is calibrated to dispense no more than 1.5 ounces of primary liquor in a mixed drink. Secondary alcoholic flavorings may then be added to a mixed drink as the recipe requires, not to exceed a total of 2.5 ounces of spirituous liquor.

Internal medicine vs surgery. . . also female vs male.  “Eating is for wimps and dermatologists!”  LMAO!

And just to show how versatile these characters are, here’s the explanation we’ve all been waiting for:

While Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines doesn’t allow YouTube (or iTunes, for that matter) to distribute his videos, Don Henley is a worthy substitute:

And another oldie but goodie:

Bob graduated from the high school that I would have attended had I stayed in Ann Arbor (darn my parents for moving!!), and one year he came back to be the Senior Prom “band”.  One of my very best friends of all time knew how much I loved Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and invited me to the prom. . . Best. Concert. Ever!

  8. I am not a fan of the new comments look. It's going to be nested threads like PL. I hate that. I like to read the comments in the order they were written and be able to pick up where I left off if I leave for a while without having to search for new comments. Not happy.

  9. Who likes it this way? I want to change it back unless there is a consensus at least as strong as that for AGW to keep it like this.

  10. Scott, et. al:I feel the same way about nested threads. Maybe we just agree not to use the Reply feature?

  11. It might not be too bad here scott since we don't get as many comments. And we can still just not use it if we don't want to and start a new comment anyway. It might be useful in some ways. I'm reserving judgment.

  12. Speaking of nested threads over at PL, the WaPo commenting system has come up with a new 'feature' whereby most of the nested comments, save the most recent two, simply vanish. It seems to have impacted all the blogs I visited today.

  13. Let's wait until Kevin (I assume) is done and then decide. The way the comment box keep appearing and disappearing I think it's still a work in progress. As long as we don't end up with a recommend feature I'll be okay. Just don't use the reply box. I like bolding what someone said the way scott does anyway and then replying. Let's wait for now though. I'm sure it will be easy to go back. AGW, lol scott.

  28. I had noticed the same thing and didn't really pay attention to it. I, personally, like nested comments some of the time (like when you're carrying on a couple of different conversations with different people in the same thread), but I've also grown to like Scott's method of bolding the comment you're referring to when you answer it.Darn blogger! Maybe this is where the WaPo's IT support group has been sent for their sins. . .

  29. michi, I could live with the nested comments also as long as they're not overused. But if people can't get in or use it the way they're used to our already small group will dwindle to nothing. Hopefully scott or kevin will be able to figure something out. WaPo Hell…..I like it.

  33. So I went over to the Blogger support board. The threaded comments is definitely something they have just released, and it appears that we will just have to get used to it. However, lots of people are complaining about the new comment font size. To be honest, it doesn't seem too small to me, but since it seems to be a system wide problem, my guess is that blogger will do something about it. I'll keep my eye on the support board for any answers. Also, I posted a question about no longer being able to cut and paste from an iPad, but no response yet.

    Like

  34. This doesn't sound good. Just read this comment on the blogger board:Blogger has just enabled threaded commenting, which is great. However, I have a blog in which comments under posts frequently exceed 200 comments (threaded commenting was enabled so readers will have discussions–we've already been doing that!). Blogger has inserted "Load more" to see the comments that would have been on subsequent comment pages with the old comment format. However, it loads incredibly slow. I waited and waited and it still didn't load."Load more"?!?!?! Slow loading? That sounds distressingly familiar. Maybe we won't have enough comments for that to matter, but…damn!

    Like

  35. I am not happy. Just as an aside re the font issue, it's not that it's too small but the spacing is off. That's no big deal but the rest is a deal breaker for a lot of us. Load More…………? Why do they do this crap when it makes things worse for everyone? I think we might have to search for an alternative. And seriously, the comment box only shows up occasionally but when you hit reply you can avoid the reply function all of a sudden because the comment box appears……….sheesh

    Like

  36. I'm going to test something out, so if the comments disappear briefly, don't worry. I'll turn it back asap.

    Like

  37. So this might be a reasonable solution. It seems to fix the font/spacing issue, and it gets rid of the "reply" button. In order to post a comment, you just click on "post a comment" and a new window will pop up. Not at all sure how this might work on the iPad. I will test it out.

    Like

  38. So this method also solves the iPad issue. I can now copy and paste from ipad. And the comments sections appears exactly as it used to, except for the comment box itself, which does not appear on the main post page, but pops up in a separate window. That window, however, contains all the comments as well. To be honest I like this, but let me know what you all think.

  62. (1) I left a comment on Blogger Buzz telling them that I don't like their new format and is there a way to just "opt out" and use the old one. . . it's awaiting approval before being posted. We'll see if it ever makes it up onto the Big Board.(2) So far I think I like this better than the popping up comments window. . . so long as someone lets us know when they put a new post up. In fact, now that I think about it, an advantage to this format may be that if you're commenting on more than one thread you may be able to have more than one commenting window open and just switch between windows rather than scrolling between posts. I'll have to give that a try. . .(3) Scott, I guess I'm warped by the fact that I get to work between 7 and 7:30 in the morning. 🙂

  75. Thinking about the changes to the comments capabilities, I have to confess that I don't really understand the point of the three options they provide. I can understand that someone might prefer a pop-up window for actual comment input, but I don't understand why anyone would prefer to have either a pop-up window or a new page for both comment input and comment viewing, when the comments are already visible on the post page itself. Why would someone prefer to view and input comments in the blogger-style environment rather than in the environment of your blog template itself? Seems totally whacky to me. Unfortunately, it seems that in order to get the template to display comments without the font/spacing problems, we have to have comment input on a totally separate page. I'm guessing that there might actually be a way to go into the code of our template and change it back to the way it used to be. When I was looking at the blogger help site last night, I saw that some people were looking for the code for the new threaded comments to add to their own templates, as they had customized their templates and the change had not fed through to their blog. That suggests to me that we ought to be able to customize our own template to get rid of it. But for me that would take some experimenting, and I don't want to blow ATiM up while messing around trying to fix it.But I will keep looking.

  76. Kevin:The threading is a personal taste. I actually dislike it a lot, because it makes it much more difficult to know when/where new comments are added, although maybe we don't have enough comments for that to be a major problem. However, on my iPad it poses technical problems. For instance, I can no longer cut and paste from the comments section. And the spcing/font looks a bit messed up. Too tight vertically, and too spread out horizontally. I think several of us agreed last night that the threaded comments was not working for us, and we should work with one of the other ones. Read through the comments above to get an idea of what we were talking about.
