Merry Christmas to all! I hope you’re having the happiest of days, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. I wanted to share this video with you; I really liked it for a variety of reasons: (1) I like choral music–there’s nothing like the blending of voices in song to touch the heart, (2) I think that Andrea Bocelli is one of the most beautiful singers of our time (and I don’t like opera in general), and (3) I love the way the cinematographer took a quintessentially Christian prayer and applied it to all mankind. May you all have a wonderful and joyous day!
(BTW, that’s the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra backing Andrea Bocelli, they’re an amazingly talented group of volunteer singers and musicians.)
I’ve searched long and hard for a video of Martina McBride doing “O Holy Night” a capella the way I first saw her perform it, and haven’t been able to (probably no surprise, since that must have been in the late ’80’s/early ’90’s). This is the closest I’ve been able to come; don’t feel obligated to watch the whole clip (her singing ends at 2:42). This is my favorite Christmas carol, along with “Silent Night”, and if I remember right it’s lms’ favorite, too:

Thanks, 'Goose."Fall on Your Knees", as I called it in grade school, was always my fave. Back on our October 15 thread devoted to popular music, I introduced LMS to Kathy Mattea with a video of "Ready for the Storm" and she liked it. I also suggested Gillian Welch to KW, b/c like me he is an Alison Krauss fan. You'd probably like her too, I am guessing, b/c from that thread our tastes seemed to overlap. Actually, there was a lot of overlap from everyone, it seemed, if I recall correctly. Kathy Mattea singing about a nice Jewish girl and her baby was a good way to start the morning.

…and a really good cover of "Belleau Wood", too.

Thanks, Mark and yello!Mark, it took me a while to warm up to Alison Krauss–her cover of Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing at All" was horrible. . . but her work since then has been beautiful. "Whiskey Lullaby" with Brad Paisley is one of the world's great songs.

Busy Christmas morning, about to run pick up my dad for Christmas brunch. Fijit is a very noisy toy. My wife was unimpressed with my "As Seen On TV" theme to her gifts this year. Ah, well. Happy holidays!

Goose: Yeah, I don't feel that bad. I got socks. A good time was had by all, my dad was well. He really needs to something about his teeth. He's waiting until more fall out before he gets dentures, so he's not repairing the crown that came off in front. Gives him a fine hillbilly look. 😉

That's a bummer bsimon. I'm on the accident prone side myself and I've always found that when I'm under the most pressure to be on my best game is when I'm the most careless. One step forward, three steps back is my motto.

breaking my hand last weekendUgh! My deepest sympathies. I don't like pain or disability, generally (gout attacks are genuinely horrible for me), but I had losing mobility–or use of either of my opposable thumbs! Sorry to hear that, and get well soon!

Brian, sorry to hear about your hand. Hope it heals rapidly. Are you in a hard cast? Which kind of plan did you go with? Separate kitchen and dining, open farmhouse kitchen, or kitchen separated from dining by an island?I installed our new master bath area double vanity using Ikea [kitchen] cabinetry last summer and cannot imagine how I would have done it with a damaged hand. Hope you have competent help!

Interesting analysis of Virginia's recent (November 2011) Ballot signature requirement change.. Short version, up until November, if you turned in 10,000 signatures, the Virginia GOP deemed it ok and put you on the ballot. 10,000 signatures was seen as enough to rule out scrutiny of the signatures. After November, you had to turn in 15,000 to avoid scrutiny.
