Apparently Gingrich and Perry also failed to qualify for the Virginia ballot. I’ll leave it to others better informed sources to explain why that happened, and merely note that, from my
vantage point, Virginia’s appears to have positioned itself, for now, as the state in which presidential ambitions are buried and, quite probably, one of the major factors in Romney taking the nomination.

Gingrich made too little effort too late, thus proving that his candidacy is still a glorified book tour.

Well then, regardless of who wins, Obama's second term will be realized. Yeah us!

TMW's view is so widely shared by almost all Rs I know that I simply do not believe WMR can win the R nomination. Never thought he could. What this race looks like in NYC and DC is way different than what it looks like in the south and no R can win the nomination without winning the south.People in other regions forget that if you include TX in the south it is the most populous region with the most electoral votes. It is also the bedrock of the current R Party. Back late from the gym and eating my oatmeal, and drinking Rio Red not from concentrate grapefruit juice, as well as extra high protein, fat free milk, from HEB, which people outside TX and MX are missing out on by not having. HEB, that is.Our daughter and the 2.9 y.o. twins have gone off to NY to visit their aunt. Before they left, we got in two nights of Chanukah. Rosanne and I taught them the dreidel game the second night. It is a simple gambling game. Everyone antes on each spin. Each spin has four possible outcomes: win the pot, win half the pot, nothing, or lose one chip – a chocolate coin in foil in this case. The game is rigged in favor of "winning, so it can go on a long time. The girls loved it. At least until Rebecca spun four straight losers and was wiped out. She was crestfallen. Rosanne said she would lend her three coins so she could keep playing, but she would take them back whenever she felt like, it was a demand loan and time for Rebecca to learn about such things. Rosanne said she would forego interest, for now. We played a long time. Rosanne and I gave our stash to the girls at the end and told them they could eat three, which we unwrapped. They loved the whole experience more than any toy.Rosanne and I leave Tuesday morning on our road trip to Durham to spend New Year's Eve with my sister. Kev, we take the far southern route in winter and we will miss Memphis, or I would sooner have told you.Houston, Baton Rouge, Mobile, Montgomery first day. Then through Atlanta to Durham the second. If any of you have road trips today or next week, happy trails! And peace be with you.

Have a safe trip, Mark! I celebrated the second first night of Hanukkah Wednesday with some friends (Judi had a meeting Tuesday that she knew would last far too long for us to do it that night) and we had some fabulous latkes. Is your family of the grated or pureed clan when it comes to the potatoes? Judi and Lisa have perfected the "trans-latke" with a center of pureed potato covered by grated, and I have to say they're the best latkes I've ever had!I fly out of here on Tuesday to spend the week with the Michiflock, getting back Saturday evening. I hope your drive to/from Durham is snow and ice-free, and that any other travelers have similarly event-free holidays!

Thanks TMW and 'Goose. We grate. The twins did not want latkes, but we adults did. They did want the apple sauce, however. They had pasta, broccoli, and apple sauce. We had latkes, with either apple sauce or sour cream, and salad.Do your friends puree onion as well as potato?

Yep, pureed onion and potato surrounded by grated potato and then fried for the best of both worlds: creamy goodness in the middle with a crunchy, golden brown and delicious exterior. Paired with a tossed salad with anise vinaigrette (my contribution), steamed green beans and beef stew. It was yummy! We also broke tradition by having Greek yogurt with the latkes in addition to sour cream and apple sauce.

Happy Christmas and those other holidays to everybody! Been busy with prepping for tomorrow, plus there's apparently a bottle of perfume in the toilet trap in the girls bathroom. Won't budge, so that means a new toilet for me. Really wanted to make Velveeta fudge for Xmas, but never managed to get ingredients. More later, happy holidays!

Delightful story, Mark. I never thought of the dreidel game as an economics lesson. I have looked at the probability as rather lopsided, but I guess that is what makes it fun.
