Saturday Open Thread

Since McWing hasn’t put up a weekend thread yet I’ll pick up his slack.

Thought for the day:

With foxes we must play the fox.

Thomas Fuller

Which of course, in today’s day and age, led me immediately to this:

Birthdays today:

William Shakespeare, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Kevin James, John James Audubon, Jet Li

Saturday Open Thread 1/11/2014

Unlike last weekend it looks like the weather is swinging the other way (at least here in the mid-Atlantic area)–fog and rain here today and tomorrow and then warming up into the 50s early in the week. I’m guessing we have some very confused plant life out there!

Playoffs start in earnest in the NFL, and (since my Packers and the Eagles both lost last weekend) I’m reduced to hoping the Seahawks make it into the Super Bowl.

Happy weekend, all!

Championship Saturday

This is all about getting to the Mythical National Championship, or the other four BCS Bowls for consolation.  First, we say goodbye to Louisville, NIU, and Fresno.  Byebye.

Then we look at what ought to be the premier matchup: MSU [10] against tOSU osu (they don’t deserve capitals, Mark!)[2], tonight around 7:15 CST.
Kelley and my sis are Spartans for life.  They are underdogs here.  While I will back MSU and Narduzzi’s creative defense in this game, it is not without fear that ESPN will engineer an SEC team into the MNC Game if tOSU osu loses.  ESPN controls college sports now and it is hopelessly in bed with the SEC.

First game is at 11CST.   Okie Lite[6] hosts the Land Thieves[17] in Stillwater in unseemly cold weather for the southwest.

At 2:30 CST, my ‘Horns [25] are in Waco ready to be drubbed by Baylor [9].  Should be Mack Brown’s last regular season game.  Because of the unseemly weather and the popular nickname for our noodle armed QB, we shall call the game “Derp on ice”.

At 3 CST, MO [5] plays Auburn [3].  It doesn’t occur to ESPN that MO and aTm have done far better in the SEC than they did in the entire history of the Big 12.  I pick MO.  I think Malzahn may be UT’s next coach despite the extension he just signed at Auburn.

At 6:45 CST Stanford [7] plays ASU [11].  Top to bottom, the PAC has been really strong this year, but this game is only for the Rose Bowl, thanks to the possibility of two unbeaten teams and the certainty that ESPN will force us to watch SEC football if either unbeaten goes down.

At 7 CST FSU [1] plays a BASKETBALL SCHOOL [20] for the ACC title.  Since Jameis has been cleared of rape charges and not indicted, there is no hope whatsoever for the BASKETBALL SCHOOL.

With Fresno and NIU gone from the unbeatens, the five BCS bowls will have ten BCS teams from six BCS conferences.  The four extras should go to the PAC, the 12, the BiG, and the SEC, but not to the ACC or the little east or whatever that abomination is.

Finally, ‘Goose may have some interest in Utah State v. Fresno [23] at 9 CST.

‘Goose, edits are welcome!

Saturday Football Open Thread, Week 12

Early games: the Yellow Jackets lost to Clemson 31 – 55 Thursday night, and UCLA beat Washington. Today’s games:

A hapless Iowa State is playing Oklahoma in what should be a rout for the Sooners (line: OK, spread 21). UPDATE: Oklahoma wins 48 – 10.

From MiA:  They call themselves Sooners to commemorate the Land Rush in which the most aggressive of them got the best homesteads.  It was an actual covered wagon race for a land grab.  Thus we call this team The Land Thieves.  Later, they adopted their two word fight song, Boomer Sooner, by plagiarizing Yale’s inane Boolah Boolah.  The Land Thieves is both historically accurate and appropriately disrespectful.

And an equally hapless Purdue is visiting Happy Valley to take on PSU (line: PSU, spread 20.5). Go, Nittany Lions! UPDATE: PSU 45 – 21.

Indiana is at Wisconsin (line: UW, spread 18.5)(ESPN2, noon EST) while osu is playing the Illini (pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease)(line: osu, spread 32)(ESPN, noon EST).UPDATES: UW 50 – 3 and osu 60 – 35, damn them

NC State is playing Boston College (line: BC, spread 7.5). Go, Eagles! UPDATE: BC wins 38 – 21.

UPDATE: Maryland (of the horrible uniforms) is in OT at Virginia Tech and won 27 – 24.

WSU is at Arizona (line: AZ, spread 13.5) and Syracuse is at unbeaten FSU (line: FSU, spread 38.5)(errrr)(3:30 EST, ABC). Cheering for the Wildcats and Orange. UPDATE: FSU 59 – 3 (yup) and WSU 24 – 17 over Arizona

Michigan is playing the blood-spattered Wildcats (line: UM, spread 2.5), and if anybody deserves to lose for bad uniform choice, it would have to be Northwestern.UPDATE: UM wins 27 – 19 in OT

MSU is at Nebraska (line: Nebraska, spread 4)(3:30 EST/ABC) and Paul and I are duking it out. Go, State!!!UPDATE: MSU wins 41 – 28

OK State (who I believe Mark refers to as The Land Thieves) is playing Texas in Big 12 action (line: Texas, spread 4.5)(3:30 EST/FOX) and I’ll stay out of the middle of that one.  From MiA: we call this team Okie Lite, but no disrespect is intended.UPDATE: OSU wins 38 – 13

Utah visits the Ducks (line: Oregon, spread 25) and USF is hosting Memphis (line: Memphis, spread 2.5)(ouch). UPDATE: Utah and USF both lost

Minnesota and Notre Dame have the weekend off. May all the right teams win!

What else?

Saturday Open Thread

Just thought I’d post an open thread so that folks can throw anything up. Shamelessly stolen from Ezra Klein’s Wonkblog:

The Best Sentences We Read Today

— “I’m going to look them in the eye and say, ‘You must be confusing me with someone who gives a f— about your opinion.'”

I hope that link works. I had to google the sentence to get to the article from Wonkblog’s link.

— “So hang on tight because you are going to get some clear and true facts without rumor and innuendo, or any accompanying B.S. and mush.”

— “Chicken-sh— editors who wouldn’t touch stories like that, they love documents, so he changed the whole ball game.”

— “The Administration has had nearly two million minutes to implement this law.”

Lydia DePillis

What else do we have? Both MSU and UM have byes this week, so I don’t have much in the way of football to watch today.

Saturday Morning Open Thread

Not much going on today other than basketball (sorry ’bout your ‘Horns, Mark!), gardening for some of us in warmer climes–although it hit 52 here yesterday afternoon, the overnight low was still 28–and weekend chores.

In addition to UT’s loss in the Big 12 conference championship last night, the Utes lost their final home gymnastics meet to Nebraska 197.6 – 197.45; Nebraska put on a hell of a show, because they only had seven active gymnasts for the meet and five of their athletes went all around.  Now those are some tough chicks!

Last, I thought  this was actually pretty good:

What do you guys have going on this weekend?

NOTE: And why, oh why, did I schedule a hair appointment for 12:15 on a day when MSU is going to start playing at 11:40 local????
