Saturday Football Open Thread (Wrap-up and Bowl Preview)

The annual Army-Navy game, played in Philadelphia, is the only game on the schedule for today (line: Navy, spread: 10)(3:00 pm EST/CBS). Since I don’t think any of us have a dog in this hunt, I hope it’s simply a great game. The weather will be problematic, with the forecast being for rain/snow at kickoff turning to snow around the end of the first quarter or so. Bundle up!  UPDATE: Navy wins 34 – 7.

  1. The sponsorship trend has gotten so out of control that it’s impossible to keep track of bowls from one year to another, they change names so often. I assume the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is what was once the Humanitarian Bowl and is played on the Blue Turf of Boise State. I was in Idaho this year and had to go by Boise State just to have a look at in person. Yup. It’s really that blue.

The other bowl I have a personal connection to is the Beef O’Brady Bowl. I used to live down the street from the original Beef O’Brady in Brandon, Florida, a sleepy suburb of Tampa. Every now and then a coworker and I would drive into Brandon to deposit our paychecks and have a sandwich for lunch at B-o’B. One time we ran across my father-in-law drinking his lunch and he ended up picking up the check. What a great guy. So it goes.

I just never had any idea a divey bar and grille like that would end up a national chain with a bowl sponsorship. But then again, Hooters got its start in nearby Clearwater, coincidentally also on State Road 60.

  2. I started out leaving out the sponsorships (since they grate on me), but then they started getting funny, so I decided to give full credit where credit is due. My personal favorite is the “San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl”–you just know it’s a second tier bowl when it has a credit union* for a sponsor! Although the New Era Pinstripe Bowl is pretty funny, also; what’s next, a Tuxedo Bowl (paging NoVA)?!

True to Texas tradition, the Heart of Dallas Bowl wins hands down for longest bowl name at 45 letters (not counting spaces).

*Full disclosure: I’m a proud CU member. Haven’t banked at a “bank” in over 10 years.
