yellojktAn oldie makes it back–I’ve finally had time to pull together a Football Open Thread (in week 10–oy, vey!). Enjoy!
Early games this week: Cincinnati beat Memphis Wednesday (?!!?) night, and USF lost to Houston Thursday night (sorry, Mike!) while ASU spanked WSU 55 – 21. Also, Rice lost to North Texas and LA-Monroe beat Troy. OK, on to the main attractions–
Virginia Tech is at Boston College (Noon EDT, ABC/ESPN2; line: VT, spread 6). This is one of those games that I know virtually nothing about, this season or historically. But for Scott’s sake, Go Eagles! [Update BC wins! 34 – 27. Woo hoo!!!]
Illinois is playing Penn State (Noon EDT, ESPN; line: PSU, spread 10). After being humiliated by MSU last weekend the Illini might be looking for some face-saving. Despite PSU’s poor defense, I don’t think they’ll get it (but I don’t think PSU will beat them by 10–I’m calling it a one-touchdown game). [UpdatePSU wins in overtime 24 – 17]
Wisconsin vs Iowa (Noon EDT, ABC/ESPN2; line: Wisconsin, spread 7). Good Big Ten football–not too exciting, but it gets the job done. [Update

Wake Forest in ACC play against Syracuse (line: Syracuse, spread 3.5). I don’t know why it surprises me every year that Wake Forest has a football team, but for some reason it does. Go, Orange! (Annnnd Syracuse takes it 13 – 0)
Arizona should smush UC Berkeley (line: Arizona, spread 14.5). Go, ‘Cats! Make McWing proud by annihilating those commies from the bay! [Update: And AZ wins 33 – 28]
Minnesota is playing Indiana (line: Indiana, spread 7). Homecoming for Indiana–does anyone go to homecoming games any more? I can’t remember if, other than as a student, I’ve ever been to a single one for either college or high school. Hmm. (IU loses to UM 42 – 39)
Navy is at Mrs NoVA’s alma mater, Notre Dame (3:30 EDT, NBC; line: ND, spread 17). This is one of those nice “historical” games–although after Navy’s wild finish last week it might be more interesting than I think. Nonetheless, Go, Irish! (Navy loses 34-38)
While the truly important game–Michigan vs MSU–is on ABC (line: MSU, spread 3.5). This probably will be a tight game, but I have faith in my Spartans. As long as MSU wins, we own the Legends division and will play osu for the conference championship. Go Green! Go White!! (MSU wins 29 – 6) mustnotgloatmustnotgloatmustnotgloat!!!!!
Oh, yeah, Northwestern is at Nebraska at the same time (line: Nebraska, spread 7), as is Kansas and Texas (line: UT, spread 27–ouch!)(Nebraska and UT win handily).
Pitt is venturing down south to Yellow Jacket territory late in the day (7:00 pm EDT on ESPNU; line: Georgia Tech, spread 8)[Update: GT dominates 21 – 10] as are the land thieves (?) OSU vs Texas Tech (line: OSU, spread 2.5)[OSU 52 – 34] in a Big Twelve smackdown on FOX.
Oklahoma and Utah are off this week.

Defeating those Marxist would be satisfying even though the real PAC menace is ASU. They too will soon be torn asunder.

This is one of those games that I know virtually nothing about, this season or historically.
The game doesn’t have any real history, apart from the fact that in 2007 BC climbed to its highest-ever ranking, #2, by beating VT which was also ranked in the top 10. This year, however, both teams suck. BC played FSU tough for a half, actually leading until the last play of the first half before getting trounced in the second half, and they led Clemson at the half two weeks ago and had a shot to win deep into the 4th quarter. But in reality BC is not very good. They got beat by UNC last week and had no offense. And VT lost to Duke, for goodness sake.
Currently it’s 7-7 and neither team looks particularly good.

Notre Dame can’t stop Navy’s option. It’s only the same offense that Navy has been running for 60 years, so I guess it is understandable that Kelly can’t figure out a way to defend against it.

I got home just in time to see the Jackets put away Pitt.
On a whim I took my wife to the Van Gogh show at the Phillips. For dinner we decided to try to get into Little Serow. We got in line at 4:45 and got seated at 7:15. We spent an hour and half and $100 at the bar at Hank’s Oyster House in the meantime.
Little Serow is very adventurous food. It’s northern Thai with no coconut milk or pad thai or anything you would find at a suburban strip mall Thai place. The soup and salad courses were some of the hottest food I have ever eaten. My wife counted the waitress filling up my water glass six times.
But the last course which was whiskey and vinegar soaked pork ribs were perhaps the best ribs I’ve ever had, eclipsing Carolina style barbecue.

I was talking to a friend and he said NYC isn’t that bad a drive for a weekend trip from here, so who knows?

Baltimore to NYC isn’t bad, but getting to Stamford can be a real pain, precisely because you have to go either thru or around NYC. You can take 95 directly from Baltimore to Stamford, but that brings you across the George Washington Bridge, which always has bad traffic and can be a real nightmare. The alternative is to skirt north of NYC and cross the Hudson on the Tappan Zee Bridge. It’ll look a lot farther on the map, but probably worth it to avoid GWB traffic.

The gig went well… We had to compete with a wedding so the crowd of usual suspects was a little thinner than normal, but we still got paid so its all good. First time at that bar and they want us back..
If you are just going to the City, take the GWB… If you are going to Stamford, take the Garden State and the Tap.

I’d even recommend the Lincoln Tunnel. You’ll get to it before the GWB, and you’re more likely to want to be in mid-town anyway, so going to the GWB will bring you too far north and you’ll have to take the West Side Highway or FDR back down.

I’ve been meaning to try little serow for quite some time. but the no reservations thing is just a killer when you’re trying to arrange child care. can you leave the line? I thought you had to stay in line or lose your spot?
