NHL Picks

I will have nothing to say on health policy for awhile. My schedule is packed from here until early June.

Pens in 6
Bruins in 5
Devils in 5
Rangers in 6

Kings in 7
Blues in 6
Blackhawks in 7
Predators in 7

Pens over Preds in 6
Fluery is your Conn Smythe winner — only because Malkin won’t be able to abuse Ruk’s team, as seen below:

  1. Hope you are wrong about the Kings. I definitely want to see the ‘Hawks abuse the Canucks in Round 2.

Crosby wins the Conn Smythe wearing a quadruple-layer helmet the size of a house. Toews wears the same helmet, but isn’t effective because he is too small and the helmet gets him all off-balance.

  2. I think Quick out-duels Luongo in a game or two and that will be the series.

  3. Yeah, but you gotta score to win and I’m not convinced the Kings can score, even with Roberto “8 GA in a Cup Final game” Luongo in goal.

Yeah, I know he stoned the ‘Hawks in Game 7 last year. But even a blind squirrel finds an acorn, now and again.

  4. You might like this, Mike — great collection of clips from Stanley Cup playoff history. little Pittsburgh heavy, but not overly so.

    • NoVaH, when I was 12 my dad and I went to MSG in NYC to see the Canadiens and the Rangers. The final score was 5 or 6 to 1. That Canadien team had two lines of interchangeable all-stars: Olmstead-Beliveau-Geoffrion and Richard-Moore-Richard. I have seen other wings do this since, on tv, but that night, almost in front of me, Beliveau pushed the puck between the legs of a Ranger defender and went around him like Chris Paul would in hoops, in a bigass hurry, and drove down on the helpless Ranger goalie, all-star Gump Worsley. Worsley could not stop the powerful slap shot over his shoulder into the net.

That Ranger team had a strong wing, Andy Bathgate, but not only did Montreal have two all star lines, they had Doug Harvey on defense and Jacques Plante in goal. I think that NHL hockey of the 50s seemed faster and less brutal than it did in say the 80s, but the Olympic style reminds of those six teams back then. the Red Wings, the Black Hawks, the Leafs and the Rangers were good teams but could not stay with the Canadiens. Bruins sucked back then, IIRC. Wings had Howe and Lindsay.

  5. I would like to say that I think the Wings will make a run, but I don’t think they have it in them. They’ve been brutal on the road and won’t have home ice advantage unless a whole lot of upsets happen. Between that and their injuries they just aren’t the team they were earlier in the season.

  6. Thanks for the link, NoVA. I’ve gotten over the ’92 Stanley Cup finals and will root for the Pens when they aren’t playing the ‘Hawks or after the ‘Hawks lose in the playoffs.

Mark, your description of Beliveau’s goal reminded me of this goal by Neymar, albeit in a different sport.

Whaddya mean ‘after the ‘Hawks lose’? ;-D

  8. C A P S Caps! Caps! Caps!…

More seriously, my sincere hope is that Crosby will get exactly one goal and the Pens go down in 4. After the Pens are out, it gives the Caps a clear path for the cup. Did I mention that I have also been dreaming that I won the Mega Millions lottery?

No Toews, no Cup. I don’t expect Toews to last through the 1st round. You know the ‘Yotes are going to go head hunting when Toews is on the ice.

Can’t believe the Pens’ meltdown last night. And 4 goals by the Kings?

  10. The Pens put on a clinic on how not to play with a lead.

  11. It’s the playoffs. You never know what’ll happen!

  12. Caps seem to be better as an underdog. Two games taken to OT with a 1-1 result on the road. Bruins should still be favored, but the Caps have the talent and are getting lucky with a hot goalie. Just the combo that’s taken them out the previous two years.

I’d take that 5 game prediction as wildly pessimistic, given that the Caps won the season series 3 -1. The playoffs are different, but that might finally work in the Caps favor.

  13. And on the other side, the Pens have surrendered 16 goals in two games! That seems almost…CAPSish…

  14. Caps eliminate Boston!

The Pens did win 2 games, finally, like Chicago.

Rangers are at it tonight. FL still in. Red Wings out.

Lulu, do you follow the Kings? I have only seen ESPN highlights this year, and it seems I cannot recall that the Kings have been featured. Saw a lot of Vancouver and Pittsburgh highlights. Of course, they are gone.

NoVA, do you root for the Caps after last night?

Blues eliminate Messi! Spectacular game, for anyone who cares about soccer. Down a man and 2-0 after only 35 minutes, Chelsea scores one before the half and another in injury time to advance to the final. 80% of the game was played within 35 yards of the Chelsea goal, but they still managed to pull it out.

  15. Mrs. NoVA is a huge Caps fan.
True story: in the second round 2 years ago we went to game 2 of Pens @ Caps (Crosby and Ovi traded hat tricks and the Caps won the game, Pens won the series in 7). We sat separately.

But, I’m pulling for the Caps only b/c happy wife = happy life.

And my picks aren’t looking so good.

Well, at least one of your predictions was kind of right — the Cup winning goalie won the Conn Smyth.

Congrats to the Kings. Nothing like winning the Cup on home ice to end a 45 year drought.
