Wednesday Admin Open Thread

Ask your questions and discuss problems in this thread today.  I don’t want to disrupt another thread and the conversation going on there.  Hopefully, we won’t need these threads much longer.  At some point we’ll put up a FAQ tab but it may take a little time.  Michi did the last one and did a fantastic job but I don’t expect her to do it again without some help.  Maybe if she starts it, we could all add to it and then edit each others q & a’s.  Unless of course she wants to do it again….. 🙂

Update:  After reading comments from last night it appears there are issues with various mobile devices and your ipad.  Any suggestions or has anyone found a work around these issues they’d like to share?

Also, in thinking about the FAQ page, perhaps we could all just write a brief paragraph regarding a feature or use of the format and then michi could just edit and put into the q & a form.  I’m trying to think of a way we can all contribute to the process so it’s not so much work for one person.

Update II:

Internet to Shut Down Wednesday to Protest SOPA and PIPA

Less than 24 hours after I noted that we’ve won a brief respite from SOPA, the bill’s chief sponsor said it’s back on track for mark up in February.

But a number of the world’s most popular websites – including Wikipedia, Twitpic, Reddit, Imgur, Mozilla and WordPress – are “going dark” on Wednesday January 18th to protest the censorship bills (SOPA and PIPA).

In addition, Google and other web titans will place prominent messages on their front pages urging their readers to oppose the draconian bills.

This could affect us today so don’t panic…..it’s only one day.

  1. Looks like we’re online at least for now. Are there any time parameters to the proposed blackout?

Can somebody with the access and know-how repost to the link dump something that was in effect “Libertarianism for Dummies”? I never did get to all of that and would like to revisit. It’s been long enough that I can’t find it through my browser history.

lms, I’m happy to write a piece of the FAQ page. Good idea to spread it out. When we get to that point, just let me know what’s needed.

  2. Okie

I don’t know the time parameters as I’ve read conflicting reports. I’ll keep searching and btw, Obama opposes both of the bills so that was nice to learn.

Originally, NoVA was the one who posted “Libertarianism for Dummies” and when he gets back we can ask him to repost unless someone else has it bookmarked. I haven’t heard from him yet but I’m sure I will soon.

  3. Re-posted from another thread from ashot regarding ipad. I don’t have an ipad so you guys are on your own there.

Scott- I have used my iPad to access the site a few times and I agree it’s a weird setup. The first page is like a book cover then it’s a weird book/collage layout where you swipe pages to get back to older posts. I think it’s cool, but I haven’t used it enough to know if it’s practical.

  4. Did I mention I won a Kindle Fire online last week? I just got it in the mail yesterday and only played around on it a little, but it seems like a pretty good device for web browsing without the price of an iPad or the size/bulk of a laptop. I think I’ll hang onto it so Mrs. Ashot can use it and so Ashot jr can play on that instead of my more expensive iPad.

  5. Jeeze ashot, you won it? I just this Christmas received last year’s Kindle version. We always wait at least a year around here as prices fall after that first season. But winning one, how lucky is that? Maybe I’ll get one next Christmas. I have to be careful what I ask for around here because my husband will move heaven and earth to get it for me whether we can afford it or not……lol

  6. Ezra’s interview with Senator Ron Wyden is worth a read:

  7. Re FAQ: I’m more than happy to go through and put the page together. If people would either e-mail me their questions (and answers if they’ve figured it out) or just post them in this column I’ll go through and put the page together this weekend. It’s a good way for me to learn the nuts and bolts!

  8. We haven’t had a single disruption because of the so-called SOPA protest. All I’ve seen are links to registering your disapproval and a black screen at google. Has anyone seen anything else? Even our wordpress site seems to be working fine.
