Views on the Republican Debate

Based on the comments here and the articles I’ve perused on the web, it seems like Romney was the clear winner last night.

According to Dan Balz and Perry Bacon Jr., Perry and Obama were the primary targets in last night’s debate.

Clizza saw last night as a clear win for Romney and a loss for Perry.

And in one of my favorite columns after any debate, the fact checker weighs in on the telling of fibs from last night.

Last but not least, we’ll give a Republican viewpoint with Jennifer Rubin saw Perry fade and Santorum get a big win.

Meanwhile, I liked okie’s point about what a contrast of Romney’s 0% capital gains tax with the Obama’s proposal. Does Romney explain somewhere how he proposes to pay for that tax cut?

Sorry that these are all from the WaPo, but work is too crazy for me to pull from too many sources and I’m trying to contribute to this great blog.

  1. A question to everyone. Anybody have an interst in a post on Tort Reform. I know it was discussed in the debate last night and since I was briefly an ambulance chaser and live in a state that is well ahead of the curve in Tort Reform, I have some views on the topic.

  4. ashot, since we have, I believe, at least three lawyers amongst us I expect a spirited debate or education for the rest of us on tort reform. I might even throw my two cents in if I can come up with an informed opinion or thought. The general consensus from last night seems to be Romney, Romney, Romney. Zero percent Capital Gains tax might bring him in a lot of campaign donations but does anyone really think it will ever happen?

  5. Perry echoes the sentiments of many R chicano elected officials in TX that we do not punish the children who were brought here, albeit illegally, when they had no choice in the matter, so they can get scholarships too. This brings both cheers and loud boos from the audience, and sharp criticism from Santorum, et al.Leaving room on his right?

  6. ashot: would love to see a post on tort reform. I think it could spark an interesting discussion.Yes, I think it's quite apparent from everyone that Romney won the debate. I just wonder what that means in the long run in regards to how he is perceived by the base. Do they really care about debate performance or are they going to continue to support Perry 'cuz he's believed to be one of them?

  7. I have to admit I was stunned by how badly prepared many of last night's participants were. I remember back in 2008 some were cringing at the prospect of Palin in a debate, but she got coached well and, while not great, surpassed the threshold that had been set.I get that debate isn't everyone's thing, but prepping for one does speak to a level of discipline, knowledge of the issues, and 'beyond soundbite' solutions that would be beneficial to have in the WH. Scat, it's way too soon to tell about Perry. I'm not sure a lot of Americans, R or D, knew or cared about last night's debate. February's a long way off and a lot will happen between now and then that will cause GOP voters to form opinions about the candidates.

  8. "Does Romney explain somewhere how he proposes to pay for that tax cut? "That would be political suicide. You don't "pay for tax cuts" on the right, citizens are just keeping a little bit more of their own money. You don't ask people how their going to pay for their salary-reduction when their company scales back, or how they are going to pay for not getting a Christmas bonus this year. If asked to explain how he might compensate for any reductions in revenue, the answer would probably be to eliminate waste and fraud, except, perhaps, in the DoD. Rick Perry is about as right as the primary process is going to allow, if history is a guide. Plus, everyone arguably to the right of Perry has or is self-destructing, or below single digits.

  9. Normally, it's the runner up last time that wins the Republican nomination (if the runner up is running). In this case, that would be Romney. He's the guy where it's "his turn". But, with the Tea Party thing . . . I think Perry stands a good chance.

  10. Morning, all.Just starting to look around at the debate reviews. Any thoughts on the gay soldier getting booed by the audience? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwoh6g05hj4(Also, Santorum's response to the soldier's question makes no sense to me. But it's early here, and the coffee is still brewing…)

  12. Agree with you, Kevin, that with the Tea Party influence this year, anything can happen. I'd hate to try and predict what's going to happen over the next few months. And Sue: the video of the gay soldier getting booed really broke my heart. Wonder how he's feeling this morning.

  13. Ashot,I'll certainly comment on tort reform if you post. I'm kind of jaded on it at this point, too much so to post myself. I have been defending some mass torts for years and have some deep thoughts about that world — ambulance chasing plus aggregate litigation = toxic brew.

  14. qb-I probably won't stray too far into the mass tort world. First, the tort reform proposals in Washington don't seem to focus much on that. Second, I don't have as much experience with class actions (although I have been involved with a few). I do agree with you that it's a toxic brew that greatly benefits attorneys (moreso plaintiff attorneys, but defense attorneys do just fine too).
