I’ll throw this up to start the day since I happen to be up and about.
Kevin has an interesting piece up on the role of Robin Hood in modern life that he posted late in the day/early in the morning last night. You should go check it out in yesterday’s archive.
Yesterday’s college football games went well for all of us, since Mark’s ‘Horns trounced UCLA, okie’s Sooners crushed Florida, and the Utes won the Holy War with BYU quite handily. Oregon also won, but I don’t know if shrink or bernie care.
I hope to have the FAQ sheet ready to throw up as the end-of-the-day Bits & Pieces for you all to look at, discuss, and edit.
As Greg would say, what else is happening? And do you have a joke for us, Scott?
Update: Kevin! You sly dog, you–you’ve already created the tab for the FAQ! Look up there next to the “Rules of Engagement” tab, guys.

Good morning, michi. And thanks for the football report. Boomer Sooner! Several top 25 teams lost. Anybody know if Alabama had the week off?I'll check out Kevin's post as soon as I pump down some coffee. My internet connection is very sketchy for me this morning, so I don't know how long I'll be here. It must be from the storms we had move through here last night . . . with lots of real rain!!!

Alabama beat North TX 41 – 0 (eek!) Did you know that Nick Saban got his start in the big leagues at MSU? He was our first successful coach in years, then LSU poached him to the SEC.Congrats on the rain, okie–that must be almost as welcome as a Sooner win! For my part, it never got above 72 yesterday and this whole week is predicted to be like that with sunny skies; this is the weather I live for in the foothills!Do you remember how I told you that spring is usually "Wednesday"? Fall is often the same way here, but we may get a fall-ish week or two this year which would be lovely.

michi, we have had some weather relief for at least a couple of weeks now in terms of much lower temps. Still had 5 days so far this month at 100 or higher, but not the extreme 110's, and we've mostly been highs in the 80's. We still have been sorely lacking in precipitation, so the rain is incredibly welcome. Mark in Austin, on the other hand, is still getting slammed.Weather has been so good here that it has been hard for me to get yard work done. My dogs are so happy about it and so frisky for old guys (they're both about 12 years old but don't know exactly) that I have spent more time just playing with them than doing work. But I judge it to be time well spent!

okie, time spent playing with dogs is always worthwhile. Plus it doesn't get deducted from your allotted time on earth. 🙂

Good morning! My trip to the farmers' market is delayed on account of rain. It's no fun sitting in a rain-soaked chair all day, if you get my drift. Niece#3 has landed in London and has been ferried to her dorm digs in one of the local institutions of learning. She will allegedly study business, though if her older sisters' experiences in Italy and Spain are any indication, it's more like a three-month vacation with college credit. Those who know the area, thanks for offering info. I may just take you up on that. There are a few in London who will admit to knowing me, so she's got ground-level contacts. Mark, are you actually in Austin? Niece#2 is 80% sure she's gonna move there by year's end.Re college football: Go Blue! (MrJS went there for grad skul)

michi, Kevin's saved you a step or two, fantastic, and now you can put your Q & A's in one handy place. I'll go set up the Bits & Pieces for tonight and then you could just drop a suggestion in to check out FAQ's. If you're not ready with it by tonight, we'll wait, I know you've got a busy day. I'll be around today for the most part if you need me to play guinea pig. Just email me if you want.

Ah, yes, MsJS–now I recall that about you. . . you married one of those people. Well, all I have to say about that is what I put on my Facebook status for all of my relatives: I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT. jk; congratulations on UM's big win over Eastern Michigan yesterday! 🙂 Hey, if we had to lose, at least we lost on national TV, right?!?Thanks, lms, I'm sure I'll be taking you up on that! I think (unless I hear differently from Kevin during the day if he's around) I'll still drop it into Bits & Pieces so that we can edit it publicly where we can all get a look at it, and then stick it up on the tab for editing as we think of things to add to it.

Michi, out of respect, I didn't say anything about MSU's loss to Football Jesus Community College. One of those things. Better luck with the Big Ten games.

MsJsFunny you mention that "European Vacation" disguised as studying abroad. Our daughter had the chance last year at about this time to embark on a 10 day trip to Mt. Saint Michel with a Masters/PhD geology class. She was expecting a rather whirlwind trip of fun and sightseeing and a little bit of tidal study thrown in. Nooooooo, they ended up walking miles and miles everyday through wet sand studying various geological formations she wasn't all that interested in. She learned a lot and had a great experience but only one night in Paris, on the town, and they were all so dead tired they folded rather early.Funny joke.

MsJS, believe it or not I'd never heard it referred to as TJCC. LOL–thanks!!

And can I just add, it ain't easy being green (in a Maize and Blue family)!

Michi, it's like Ann Arbor CC. One could call it South Bend CC, but Touchdown Jesus just begs to have a voice. MrJS has called it that for years. I assume he picked it up while in Ann Arbor.Ouch! Being green in a maize and blue fam must be challenging.

Thanks for that insight, MsJS. I do realize it takes you off thread but was not sure if it refreshed as well.

What MsJS said. It can be handy, though, if you're looking for an old post and don't want to open each individual day in the Archives on the right, or if you want to see if new comments have been made on a given post (it brings up all posts and lists the number of comments under each one).

Any engineers here know a lot about cablemTV? Or what legal requirements there are for cable networks to furnish QAM stations? Comcast is dropping a big chunk of analog, and I'm curious if that means there will be more QAM stations, and what they are in fact supposed to be providing. If anyone here knows.

Question:Have we come to any consensus about whether to post a comment on one thread that a new thread is available?

Good morning, Kevin! Thanks for putting up the FAQ tab!

MsJS: I assume you're thinking of something like what Greg does. I don't know if there's a consensus or not, but it should be easy enough to do once everyone is comfortable with posting live links in the Comments (FAQ sheet stuff).

MsJSIt's definitely something we want to do (I think) and my preference would be whomever is posting the new thread to put the link into the previous thread. That might not work if it is a pre-scheduled post though so we'll all just have to watch for the new one and let everyone else know it's up.

You are welcome, Michgoose. MsJS: post that a new thread is available in the previous thread, if you think about it. I never have, yet, but that doesn't mean it's not a good idea. 😉

I could have lived without reading this but thought I'd share anyway. All Things Considered, September 17, 2011 · In southwest Miami, a small subdivision is being called "ground zero" of an invasion by a destructive, non-native species."It's us against the snails," Richard Gaskalla, head of plant industry for Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz.That's the Giant African Land Snail, to be precise. They can grow to be 10 inches long. They leave a slimy trail of excrement wherever they go. They harbor the microscopic rat-lung worm, which can transmit meningitis to humans. And they will literally eat your house."They'll attach to the side of the house and eat the stucco off the side of the house," Gaskalla says. The snails are also attracted to garbage and pet food that's been left out.Giant African Land Snails are restricted in the US. Gaskalla says people often smuggle them into the country in their pockets, because they make popular novelty pets.

They must smuggle them in as babies, I've never actually seen a 10 inch pocket.
