Apropos of Nothing: Merrie Olde England

I have London on my mind this weekend. Niece #3 heads there this evening for her semester abroad experience. So I thought I’d read up to see what she’ll land in come Sunday morning.

PM David Cameron seems to be competing with French president Nicolas Sarkozy as to which European leader gets the bigger rock star welcome in Libya.

Does the term ‘mission accomplished’ and all it came to represent mean nothing to these men?

–Unlike many conservative pols on this side of the pond, Cameron is “emphatically in favour of gay marriage.”

–Unemployment in the UK is at 7.9%. I’m not clear yet on the specifics, but there seems to be evidence of a national jobs effort in the UK. Unlike in the US, where there seems to be evidence of more political gridlock.

–I’m hoping my niece doesn’t run into these creepy dudes. Hopefully they will remain out of sight until next summer.

–The exchange rate is moving slightly in my niece’s favo(u)r. A month ago, one pound sterling was worth about $1.65. Now it’s about $1.58. Not a lot, but better than the other way around.

  1. Interesting, MsJS! Where is niece headed? I spent 10 lovely days in the Highlands of Scotland a few years ago, exploring my roots (family castle! Too cool!!) and our exchange rate was, for all intents and purposes, $2.00. ick!I didn't know that Mr. Cameron was in favor of gay marriage, although that would match the Brit's general ahead-of-us on the curve when it comes to gay rights (they've allowed gays to serve openly in their military for years). And Wenlock and Mandeville the cyclopses (cyclopi??) as mascots?!?!? Yikes!!

  2. Lucky girl, studying abroad. I've never traveled further than Canada and Mexico but my kids have all traveled and I think it's fantastic to experience the climate, real, political or social. I thought that Cameron/Sarkozy piece was funny for some reason. Such high drama and glory hogging.Mr Cameron praised the Libyan fighters as ‘lions’ and described their revolt as the moment ‘when the Arab Spring could become an Arab Summer’ in which ‘we see democracy advance in other countries too’.

  3. MsJS:I worked in London for over 7 years, from 1999 – 2006. I lived just south of the city, in Surrey, a town called Claygate (very near Cobham, which is a huge American community.) If you need any insights or info, let me know.

  6. michiCO has been taken by my cousin and his wife to their house to rest for a couple of days. The more I learn, the more I think I better send the nurse practitioner on the school campus a huge basket of flowers, fruit, candy and maybe a cash rewards. Phew. And my granddaughter let me ride her new horse but only in the arena, I did get to take old Sally out on the trail though.Re the UK, my dad was stationed just outside of London during WWII and loved it. He retired at 58 and the first thing up was a long trip overseas.

  7. MsJS, you're bringing up all sorts of good memories with this post–kudos! And I hope your niece has the time of her life in MOE.That's good news, lms; think your daughter can manage to look fragile long enough for her first date with the BLM guy? They (men) love taking care of Amazons when they're fragile, you know. ;-D

  8. I don't know michi, last time she tried that was in high school and ended up throwing up on her prom date about a week before the prom after ear surgery. Luckily all the other girls were already taken……………..true story.
