Open thread for Administrative discussion (Thursday)

Update: We’re using this thread to discuss site issues today (Thursday).

If you run back and forth and juggle all things in your life, you get here and want to see where the people who said something said it, especially if in response so no one feels ignored if you talked to someone else or started with a new post.

I really like the old PL. One long string that was all there was, if you saw it, that was it. I really don’t like clicking all over the place I can’t even remember where I said what to whom and this is the first few hours.
Could we have a conversation about moderator controlled new strings?

  1. shrink, I'm feeling the same way, especially if you've been gone for awhile and come back in. I don't understand the term "moderator controlled new strings" though. I was also thinking if we switched the contributors column with the archive column you'd have a better idea of where to start, if that makes sense. One thing I've noticed in the couple of years I've been commenting at the Plumline and all the changes, it sometimes just takes a little time to get used to them.

  2. Well jezze, ask and you shall receive. While I was typing scott(?) did it. Thanks, does that look better and seem more organized to anyone else?

  4. shrink, that can be done. All we have to do is turn off comments, then the only way to respond to someone is to make a new post. I would point out, though, that as it is now, it is actually quite like the original PL. Remember that each time Greg made a new post, an new set of comments started. If you were having a conversation with someone on an older post, you either had to bring it forward or remember what post you were talking on. That is pretty much what we have now, except that it is us making the new posts, not Greg. The comments on any individual post act exactly like the old PL, ie all in one long string, in time order.

  5. I don't see anything, maybe I have too much Chrome ClampDown on. I'll look into that.

  6. You can also open each post you're interested in following in a separate tab.

  7. see I want to ask Mark a question here, about another iteration of this idea, but I don't know if he will see it, so I'd have to start a new thread to ask the question, then etc., it is the old vertical versus horizontal layering problem

  8. shrink, what if we did an open thread at a certain time in the late evening and ended the day with it. It could just be a thread to play catch up like happy hour, with or without links and commentary, but the evening ended with it. Everyone could catch up from the day without bouncing around from post to post. Anyone working on a new post would save if for the morning.

  9. That's a good idea.

  10. Yeah, I think so too. I would probably be working on a post for tomorrow in the evenings because I'm on west coast and it's quiet after everyone retires. I would just save it and post the next day. We could just let everyone know that the last post called whatever we want like maybe "sweet dreams" lol is it everyday. We could take turns posting it and put links in or something if we wanted or a brief comment.

  11. or we could do a new thread every eight hours, always open, with so few people, it isn't as if there are going to be 100s of posts and it loads and scrolls so fastthat way, when you're gone you can read a thread and know what happened, no way I can go away for four hours after being in for four and come back for a ten minute window and look back at every thread posted just to figure it all outwith one string, you go back and speed read to the present

  12. So when you are gone, you can easily find and read one thread and know all that happened. Also for looking back, you'd only have to vaguely remember the time, not the topic thread too.

  13. I'm off to bed. I understand the frustration, shrink. I'll think about it and see if we can come up with a good solution.

  14. Agree with those ideas of lms, Scott and sue. It is a little challenging just juggling things and learning to navigate a new space, but I wouldn't go drastically changing things. It can all be managedby smart posting and commenting and tabs. Today, for example, most of us are going off topic without much restraint, which I have no problem with, but, if we stay a little more on topic and then have open threads, that will help, too. Like Scott said, it's basically like old PL, just with us in control of posting. And, for this to be fruitful, contributors need to contribute — we need to blog.

  16. Three open threads per day maybe. Morning, noon and evening. That might work but I still think it's best to have a nighty night thread with no more posts until manana. We'll figure it out. It's definitely nice to have some control over our blog for a change and be able to make changes as we go when they seem necessary. At some point we need to stick with something though or people will get frustrated with the constant scenery changes. We're obviously not there yet. I think it was Taroya today who said she doesn't deal with change very well and I'd bet she's not the only one.

  17. qb, I keep reminding everyone to author posts but I think we're still too busy just settling in. I'm looking forward to the interesting posts though and I'd love to have time to write one right now, if not interesting at least provocative. I haven't seen a headline or read a link in days. We'll get there. Plus we're still trying to draw people over here. You and mark did your part today, thanks.

  18. I'm with Lms about an Overnight Thread. It also might be a good idea to let a post "mature" for like 20 or 30 minutes before putting a new one up. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of posts on busy news days. Another suggestion is to have, on the right or left side some sort of link dump where we can link to something interesting, with a brief description, that may not be worthy of a full posting.

  19. Agreed, lms, I know everyone is just figuring it out and it's the shake-down cruise. I think it can work really well this way with tweaks as needed.john/banned asked over at PL where I had been, so I was thinking of dropping him a hint to email you.

  20. Link Dump, I like it. Seriously good idea. McWing, yeah I was thinking of maturing posts also. It's hard with no one person consistently monitoring though, but I think we could suggest people do that out of politeness. When you work on a post you can save it as a draft for awhile before just throwing it out there two minutes after someone just posted.

  21. I'm thinking of doing a post on how well we all get along when we're not talking politics, religion, economics or foreign policy. What do you guys think?

  22. I think there is a clue here: we get along well when we are trying to solve problems and throw out ideas without being too emotionally invested in the solution.

  23. Good idea on the subject. We all know each other a little more and realize that despite some of the differences you mention, there is a tremendous amount of commonality, what with kids, work pressures, houses, weather, what have you.Well, my opinion anyway.

  25. Good point. That might help shrink.BTW, not everyone is an administrator. If you click on settings and then permissions on the dashboard, you can see who is and is not (but only if you are one, I think.)

  26. Morning allKeep me posted what you discover re changes to the site. I don't mind experimenting a little before it gets too crowded, hopefully it gets crowded. I'm going to try to work on some sort of a post today, hopefully.Let's keep this thread open for today for tech stuff so we know where to check on progress. That's a good idea btw okie, re an administrative thread. And I think for now we should just do one open thread at night and see how that goes, I'll post it tonight and then we'll figure out later how to make it a daily event and how to share the responsibility.

  27. Do you think shrink would mind if we changed the title to this thread to daily admin or something?

  28. change it for sureit sounds too much like, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!"

  29. Thanks shrinkThere were some good ideas last night, and concerns. I'll be glad when all the admin/tech stuff is settled so we can really move on discussions. I'm going to post an end of day open thread tonight and see how that goes. I was thinking around 5 or 6 our time?

  30. qb, I know you're probably off already but saw your request at plumline, and I believe that will work quite well. Thanks

  31. qb, I think that over the next couple of weeks we should be able to entice a few posters to at least check us out if we do it somewhat more gracefully than when I first began. It's funny, Sunday night I suggested our own blog and by Tuesday we were up and running, mostly thanks to Kevin. I should have spent some time thinking the process through first, but everything moved so fast. I'll keep you posted re banned, I haven't heard from him yet.I'm working on a post that may drive you and scott a little crazy as it's an anthropological study of bankers, lol. You know me, off beat as usual.

  32. Oh, and the admin thread idea was okies. I don't see any tech people around this morning though. I am going to post an evening open thread though and see if that resolves some of the issues. I was thinking of quoting FDR on Social Security, what do you think?

    Like

  33. FDR and ss usually stir things up. But I am trying to let go of my hate. That should make shrink happy lol.If you don't eventually hear from banned I will check back with him. The thing we have to avoid is losing some of the others by not being over there.I will be dropping in and out due to work.
