Ground Rules-Please Read & Discuss

Okay, so tonight was a little chaotic. I don’t actually have any ground rules just some ideas. I’ll throw them out there and then we can all discuss them. Kevin and I thought that the first 15 to 20 plumliners could all be administrators, that way there’s someone around to monitor the site for strangers that don’t contribute to the dialogue in a meaningful way. As administrator you can edit or delete posts, but we need to decide when that would be appropriate. I’m a free speech advocate and don’t have much trouble avoiding or ignoring commenters without engaging them so I’m probably not the best person to decide. I do think we should use the privilege very judiciously and maybe give a warning or a reason first just to be honest or discuss amongst ourselves via email or something.

Second set of commenters, if we get them, could be authors and post the longer comments or diaries at the top of a thread the same way administrators can but would not be able to edit or delete other posts. We could wait and see how their comments are first if it’s someone we’re unfamiliar with and make it an invitation only deal.

I think we should all try really hard not to intrude on the Plumline and talk about our new blog too much. I know we’re trying to recruit some of the better commenters from there but we need to be careful. And for now at least, I don’t think we should ever link to our blog there. Right now it’s closed to the public but it won’t stay that way.

One last thing, the success of this blog and the enjoyment and education we receive from it depends on our willingness to begin new threads with interesting ideas and links so I hope everyone will participate. Also, AFAIC off topic is fine in any thread.

This was quick and dirty so forgive any mistakes. The floor is yours.

  1. One last thing and it's just a suggestion, I think we should still comment over at the Plumline just like before, I know I'm planning on it.

  5. Jeeze okie girl, you're in there twice now? lol Hopefully Kevin can bail you out of this one. Watch for Bernie and shrink to show up today and maybe qb, but where's michigoose?

  6. Good morning, lms. Yes, I'm here twice. Kevin will delete the first okiegirl when he can and then I will clean up this login. I've been playing around this morning trying to learn how to navigate here. I'm sure I'll make my share of mistakes!I too am wondering about michi. She was on PL last night telling others to email you, so she definitely knows about it. Shrink also mentioned that he had emailed you before. Might they have emailed the first email address and not resent to the new one?

  7. I deleted the first Okie girl. Now, Unknown, you need to go edit your profile. Click on your name (Unknown) in the contributors list and there should be an option to edit. Click the edit button, and then under "Display Name", type in "Oklahoma Female", and then you have a fine new display name. ;)You can also ad an avatar there.

  9. There are other invitations going out, some at Mark's discretion, some at lmsincas. Michigoose and Fairlington Blade have not responded as yet, but they are currently the only open invites. I can resend Michigoose and Fairlington, but the invites might be getting caught in a spam catcher. They should check their junk mail folders if they've been looking for an invite.

  11. Regarding free speech: As long as I'm here, I'm going to show zero tolerance for anything that smacks (to me) of creepy violent rhetoric. The idea that genocide is a good solution to political disagreements (not that that would ever occur among this outstanding group) or that someone who is for or against gun control "gets what they deserved" (or any variation thereof) when someone gets shot . . . that sort of stuff will not stand.Everybody here has a name (except Unknown), so admin, author, or commenter, ought to use that name.I'm not a big fan of pointless deprecation, but sometimes things like Rethuglicans or Obamacrats are so natural the people using them don't think about it. I will politely suggest that such nomenclature gets in the way of informative and open dialog. But I don't want to carry the Nanny-ism too far. Also, the Save The Rain Forest method of performance art is not appropriate for this venue. People bent on ruining the experience for everyone else will be excluded. Even if we have open comments, with a dozen admins, no STRF could ever have their posts stay for more than a minute. I think that's probably the best solution to that. But, basically, I believe in an open environment–until someone starts talking about who ought to be shot or what group actually deserves mass extinction. I'm not worried about that happening among any of the folks we are inviting (not at all!), but I think it's good to go ahead and put that ground rule out there, for the sake of complete and clear communication.

  12. I agree with most of what you said Kevin, I just have a high tolerance, too many years at the Plumline. I don't appreciate death threats though. Ruk was one of the ones who was supposed to email you, I'll check with him again. You got my eamil re bernie and shrink?

  14. As administrators we can use our authority independently of anyone else but I think we should at least discuss via email with at least a few other admins before we exercise said authority. I wouldn't go in and just excise a comment without at least discussing it first.

  15. kevin, I too agree with your parameters (although, lms, if something like STRF starts threadbombing here in future, I don't think that requires discussion). In general I do not foresee myself editing or deleting anything.Car battery dead this morning. Yippee. I'm twirling and waiting for it to charge before belatedly heading to work.Morning Plum is up.

  16. Can something be undeleted or is deleting fatal? Is there someplace here we can set our time zones?

    Like

  17. Deletion is permanent, although posts can be turned to drafts to be hidden from the general public. The time zone is the same for everybody on the blog, so . . . what's the most common time zone and we'll set it to that? I'm Central time.

  18. If we have to just pick one I say go with ET. We're all used to that and after all it is the Capitol. I don't care that much. Right now I'm an hour behind what shows up so it must be mountain time.

  19. Okie and I are obviously Central, too.12BB and lms are Pac.I sent Kev and lms an email about some invitee possibilities I would like to push.FairlingtonBlade was one, but I think he is only checking his email once a day this week because of a heavy schedule.

  20. I hope someone comes up with a new post sometime today. All you have to do is go up top on the right and hit new post. I suggest putting in a title, the rest is easy. I haven't had time to read the news the last couple of days so I'm temporarily out of ideas. Even just some interesting links borrowed from elsewhere would be nice.

  21. Also, once you've completed a new post and it's ready to be viewed by others, let us know. "New post up" lol. Okay enough with the admin stuff, from me anyway. I'll try to find time today to discover something interesting to talk about, it's not as if there's nothing going on.

  22. So, Central or Pacific? Let's put it to a vote. Busy at work, I'm a little dry for long thoughtful posts. I may link to something as a conversation starter a little later today. Conversation starting posts don't have to be essays.

  27. I'm eastern time zone and would prefer that – but will deal with what's decided by the majority. Also, as far as deleting comments, etc. – I'm kind of with Kevin and lmsinca on this – I think it should be used only in the rarest and extremest of cases. Violent threats, repeated spamming after a warning etc. Safe to say most of us probably recognize it when we see it. I think it might be a good idea to establish a ground rule that perhaps a minimum number of moderators have to agree before deletions occur. I know how much you conservatives hate bureaucracy, etc., but I just think it might avoid a moderator rushing and deleting a post for emotional or personal reasons. Just a thought,
