Bits & Pieces (Monday Evening Bag of Randomness)

This a whole page from The Daily, but I’m mainly pointing you at Dull But Significant at the bottom. Basically, there’s been a study that shows talking about politics makes you cranky. If the subject is politics, everybody is automatically angrier. Hmmm.

Our backgrounds and perspectives prompt us to look at the world in different ways. Kitteh sees fish different than babeh. There’s a lesson there.

Paypal now processing over $315 million in payments per day. I dunno, this just sounds dangerous and worrisome to me. Hey, you kids get off my lawn!

Do you remember The Five Man Electrical Band? You know, “signs, signs, everywhere a sign”? They had a song called “Werewolf” that I listened to hundreds of times as an impressionable 6-7 year old. It only made #64 on the Hot 100, but was featured on K-Tel’s 1974 compilation 8-track tape, Dynamic Sound. I remember listening to some of the songs a lot–some of those other songs, I don’t remember at all.

(someone, please go get this image for me and post it here: Dynamic Sound (8 Track) | Flickr – Photo Sharing!) . . . I cannot, alas. And it’s really important.

I’m having a nostalgia-gasm right now, because I’m listening to “Hearbeat (It’s a Love Beat)” by the DeFranco Family, a song I probably haven’t heard since I was 7 years old, yet it sounds deeply, deeply familiar. Strange how the brain works. BTW, that link is to the DeFranco’s appearance on the Jack Benny show. God, I’m old. 😉

This is the cover to my 2009 album, Two-Fisted Tales of True Romance:

Although I picked those images up off the interwebz, at one point in time I actually had each of those comic books.

Which of my once vast comic collection do I still have? I have a lot of Richie Rich.

I always loved Richie Rich. No wonder I’m a Republican! — KW

Kevin, you’re scaring me now!

JK (I think).
Deep question for the day: now that living people can be put on postage stamps, who would you put on one (and why)? — Michigoose

  1. Kevin, I'm more disturbed by the bit about German men and penis enlargement surgery on that page. And can you imagine getting that past the WaPo Net Nanny?!?!?!!!!!!

  6. I loved Richie Rich, too! Don't know why that didn't translate into my political views. My votes for living people on stamps: Bob Dylan, Maya Angelou, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Nolan Ryan.

  7. Oh, Kevin, I'm at least partly a girl-geek. It's the action figures that qb's friend has that make me wonder. Steven King, Maya Angelou and Sandra Day O'Conner for sure! I think I'd go with George Lucas before Steven Spielburg, though. Eric Clapton and Simon and Garfunkel.

  8. Michi, no, actually married with grown kids. Very smart lawyer. Collected for a long time.So I still can't comment at PL from home but can from my office. No idea how that works. When I comment at home, it says "Posting" but nothing happens.

  10. Wow! The exception that proves the rule (to coin a phrase). Haven't run into that problem at PL, although I've not tried to post much lately. beach has weirded me out–he's stalking Chris now (who foolishly gave him his real e-mail address rather than a throw-away one). I know what you're thinking, but we're all friends and administrators now. . . 🙂

  11. LOL, qb–I hate to say it but he looks like a comic book and action figure collector! However, even funnier, did you notice that my fine alma mater was listed as another repository of outstanding comic book collections? My geekitude clearly runs deeper than I suspected. . .

  12. Beach is a seriously disturbed person imo. I consider cao/cheo/etal disturbed as well, but his madness is consistent and understandable. I think Beach is probably a danger to society.

  13. Haha, I did notice that but failed to make the connection. I saw U2 this summer at Spartan Stadium. Didn't get to spend any other time there. My son and I are waiting for MSU to play ASU in the Rose Bowl some day, just because Sparty versus Sparky would be an awesome mascot face off.And yes John is a geek several times over. (Sorry, John, if you ever see this.)

  14. I'm waiting for the day (now that the Utes are in the Pac12) that it's a Utah-UM or MSU Rose Bowl. The Utes have a long way to go, though. Under Urban Meyer they almost won in the Big House a few years ago, but they haven't been the same since he jumped ship to Florida.I still haven't forgiven him for that.Sparty v Sparky. . . now that would be something to see! College football is about the only thing that's making me regret giving up the TeeVee Machine right now.

  17. BTW, action figures are very big in the geek community. One of my favorite podcasts, Big Kev's Geek Stuff (no relation) had a regular segment on action figures. It's a big as collecting comic books (indeed, Big Kev himself doesn't collect individual comic books, but reads anything he's interested in in the trades (usually 6 to 12 issues released as a book), but collects a lot of figures. And when the geeks don't like how a statue is done, you'll hear about it. It's big business. Sideshow collectibles advertises heavily on sites like Ain't It Cool News, and if I had the disposable income, I might collect, too. I want this one, but, at $324, I'm going to have to pass:http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=35519And there's a huge market in abstract figures–versions of well-known characters done as anime or in tear-drop shapes or plush or vinyl . . . it's a huge business. How about a replica of the Serenity spaceship from Firefly . . . for $3000 dollars!Spend some time exploring the Sideshow site. Then take a look at My Plastic Heart. The specialize in vinyl figures. No, I don't have any, but I remain fascinated in the expansion of geek culture, which, when I was growing up, was mostly comics, graphic novels, and genre books and movies. And maybe Star Wars toys. Now it's anime and a lot of action figures. Statues, collectibles . . . geek culture is huge (if it wasn't, we wouldn't be getting all these superhero movies, and never would have gotten the Tron sequel).
