Comments format

Does everyone like the way the comments section works?  Another option is to have the comments come up in a separate pop up window.  I actually prefer that, because you can still see the front page in the main window, which can be refreshed for new posts without losing the comments that you might be looking at for a particular post. Not sure if/how it might effect mobile devices, though.  Food for thought.

  1. No I can't tell where the action is.

  2. I don't know exactly what you mean scott. But I know one thing I'd like, if it's possible, is for the blog archive to be at the top instead of contributors. Can they be switched? I tried to look at that today and couldn't tell.

  4. As for what I meant on the comments, right now it is set up so that when you click on the "comments" link at the end of any post, you get taken away from the front page to a page with just that post, and comments embedded below the post. It could be set up so that you don't leave the main page, but instead the comments come up in a separate, pop-up window.

  5. Thanks scott, that feels better to me. We'll see what everyone else thinks. Okay, I get it I think. And you would be typing in that pop up window to comment? What seems weird to me now as I'm typing here is that there is nothing below me but a long string of "stuff" on the right. That would fix that right? We could try it and switch back if everyone complains.

  7. I think we need someway to control when new posts appear so the old one doesn't get neglected or something. Maybe self discipine? Right now I'm having a similar discussion with both you and shrink on two competing but similar posts.

  8. Scott, I kinda like the format now. Reminds me of the old PL, where it was stacked. As far as seeing the main page, all you have to do is look at the bottom to see if there is a "Newer Post". Though it would be cool if the "Newer Post" and "Older Post" would have the current comment count for those threads next to it.It'd be even cooler if it could make me a sandwich.

  10. scott try it and let's see what it looks like while there's not too many people around. Warn everyone on the next post though so they don't freak out.

  11. lms…I now what you mean, but I think that problem will die down once we are out of start-up mode. Since lots of posts are about the blog set-up, we end up having the same set-up discussions on different posts. When we start posting on real subjects, that should stop, I think.McWing, I definitely agree on the comment count. Kevin said there was a way to add that. I will look around and see if I can figure out how to do it. For now I will leave the comments format as is.

  12. Also, when do old posts actually disappear into a real archive. Right now every post since we created it are still there, except the few we intentionally deleted. Okay we're not going to try it.

  13. I believe all of the posts will remain on the front page for a month, and then will get archived. That's what Kevin has it set for. Depending on how often new posts get added, we may want to change that to weekly. It can also be daily, but that probably won't be necessary.

  14. Actually now that I look at the number of posts just today, daily might be the best option.

  15. I think at the rate we're going we're already at weekly. Go to the next post and read my most recent response to shrink and see what you think.

  16. If it could be done, can you make it possible for posters to drop to their most recent posts on each thread? that way those of us who watch threads for additions can drop to their most recent post and move on from there.

  17. I know what Scott means. You see the thread starter, but cant judge comments or comment drift without opening the comments section.
