Markets are flat ahead of the FOMC meeting. Bonds and MBS are up.
Mortgage Applications fell 9% last week as rates ticked up a hair. Purchases fell 4.7% while refis fell 12.7%. Refis dropped to 51.7% of all loans.
The FOMC decision is expected around 2:00 pm EST. Expect to see another reduction in asset purchases and no change in the Fed Funds rate. The focus will undoubtedly be Janet Yellen’s dot graph which shows the range of Fed Funds rate projections by the different FOMC members. Remember after the March FOMC meeting the bond market sold off on Janet Yellen’s “as soon as six months” comment, which was referring to the one lone dot sitting at the 1% line in 2014. Current forecasts for 2014 GDP are 2.8% – 3%, unemployment 6.1% to 6.3%, and inflation 1.5% to 1.6%. The Fed has consistently been overshooting on their GDP and unemployment estimates, while their projections of inflation have been more or less on target. So the big things to watch for are a) Janet’s dot graph, and b) revisions to economic forecasts.
Julian Castro, Obama’s nomination to head HUD believes that credit standards can be eased for FHA loans without jeopardizing FHA’s solvency. HUD is keen to increase access to credit, not only for minorities but also for the first time homebuyer, who has been the missing piece of the puzzle in the housing recovery.

Exactly. I can’t believe the courts will uphold this. If 2 guys in the patent office can unilaterally and capriciously withdraw trademark protection that has existed for years and upon which business decisions and investments have been made, there is no point to issuing trademarks in the first place.
The sentimental left will probably cheer this action, because it is pretty much exclusively interested in preferable results, in this case the elimination of an offensive (to them) team name. Anyone who cares about the rule of law and an objective process, however, not to mention the very purpose of having a patent office in the first place, should be appalled.

Man, I would have thought you’d at least have seen the movie if you are going to say it isn’t a Christmas movie. We hear the melody, not the words, repeatedly before we ever hear the words. Janie (that’s George’s daughter, George being the main character) plays it on the piano over and over again, driving George crazy as he frets over the impending scandal looming over the old Bailey Building and Loan. It’s a key scene in the movie.

Star Trek: Into Darkness was terrible. Especially the casting of Benedict Cumerbatch, but included the reversal of the Kahn ending, and Bones keeping around to experiment on with the magic blood of pasty British middle-eastern dictators who are genetically modified . . . and turning the Enterprise engineering section into a brewery. And Chris Pine. And . . .
The first one was a weak but forgivable start, but the second was just bad. Hopefully the 3rd time will be the charm, with no more dues ex machine via emergency phone calls to old Spock.

@McWing: Karl Urban was an awesome bones. Underused in the 2nd movie, he was absolutely my favorite part in the first. Anyhoo, I saw Man of Steel in the theater instead of Into Darkness, and regretted the decision. Man of Steel was worse.
It’s not a matter of comparing it to Kahn, it’s a matter of how it aped Kahn. It was just silly. And the casting of Benedict Cumerbatch as Kahn made no sense. The movie could have been improved just by casting, say, Benicio Del Toro as Kahn.

It’s a Wonderful Life is the ideal pre-Christmas movie. It debuted on December 20th, making it reasonable to claim it as a Christmas movie, I think. That and the heavy emphasis on Christmas in the film. And gifts. And “rebirth”. And angels. And, anyway, Hark, the Herald Angels sing is, xmas carol or not, about the birth of Christ. Which is . . . Christmas.

Technically, I probably don’t support it. if it’s bigotry (I missed the original postings, probably, I’m such a transient). But I don’t know exactly what he said. Of course, I think I’m on record as being opposed to heterosexual marriage, so take that as you will.
The libertarians support anti-gay bigotry? That doesn’t seem likely. BTW, condemning for tacit support is kind of lame. Not everybody can or should have every dog in every fight. Not everybody is up to it on that particular Thursday night, or whatever.

Actually your characterization of him as a bigot and your references to his “dislike of gays” indicates pretty clearly to me that in fact you have no idea what his viewpoint is. I think it is pretty much a dead certainty that if you were offered $500 to provide an objective, nonjudgmental recap of his beliefs, you couldn’t do it. Regrettably you also seem to have no interest in understanding him, either. You refuse to consider, or are incapable of considering qb’s point of view in anything other than the crudest, most simplistic and unthinking terms.
In fact, the bigotry charge is really nothing more than typical liberal projection. It is you who is engaged in real bigotry, ie utterly intolerant of qb’s beliefs about homosexual behavior and the effects of its normalization on society. These are beliefs that you think must be completely eliminated from polite society. And so you (mis)characterize them, stigmatize those who hold them with words like “homophobe” and “bigot” and “hater”, and even try to bully people who don’t explicitly reject them by declaring them to be “tacit” supporters of bigotry. These are not views to be discussed, debated, argued, subjected to evidential analysis. They are to be simply stomped out and removed completely from the conversation. That is the real bigotry playing out here.

Volokh on the Redskin trademark issue. After noting that all the Redskins have lost is the presumption of ownership over the trademark, ie they can still sue over unauthorized use but have a higher bar to prove ownership, he notes more generally:
My tentative view is that the general exclusion of marks that disparage persons, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols should be seen as unconstitutional. Trademark registration, I think, is a government benefit program open to a wide array of speakers with little quality judgment. Like other such programs (such as broadly available funding programs, tax exemptions, or access to government property), it should be seen as a form of “limited public forum,” in which the government may impose content-based limits but not viewpoint-based ones. An exclusion of marks that disparage groups while allowing marks that praise those groups strikes me as viewpoint discrimination. But I’m not sure that courts will ultimately see this my way; so far they haven’t been inclined to do so, precisely because the exclusion of a mark from federal registration leaves people entirely free to use the mark.

I have no issues with homosexuals and do not care about gay marriage. Used to be opposed to it, now I just don’t care. I think it’s inevitable, and the end results will not spell doom. Semantics I feel more strongly about.
